Counter-Strike Online is a 3D tactical MMOFPS game developed by Nexon with supervision from Valve. The game is basically a conversion of the original Counter-Strike into a free to play “MMO” with additional RPG elements. Players earn experience and in game money for winning matches which can be used to unlock additional weapons. In its core the game is nearly identical to Counter-Strike on Valve’s own Steam service, but this version has a few additional weapons and some interesting game modes. This version was designed specifically for the Asian market but is available world-wide through its publisher.

Counter Strike Online Overview

Counter-Strike Online is a remake of Valve’s original “Counter-Strike” game by Nexon specifically designed for Asia. Valve developed the game with supervision from Valve and designed the game to play a lot like Combat Arms, Sudden Attack and other popular free to play “MMOFPS” games. The game’s core gameplay mechanics and visuals are identical to Counter-Strike which is available on Steam – the only differences between the two versions is that Counter-Strike Online has “MMO” elements as well as new weapons and game modes. The game was originally launched in South Korea back in 2008, but launched in Malaysia and Singapore in October, 2010. This version (through IAHGames) has no IP-Restrictions in place, meaning anyone in the world can play the game. Keep in mind, since the game is located in South-East Asia, there are some serious latency issues. The game modes in Counter-Strike Online are:

Game Modes:

Detonation – The classic “plant the bomb / Defuse the bomb” mode. Terrorists win by defeating all of the Counter-Terrorists or by planting the bomb. Counter-Terrorists win by defeating all the Terrorists or by defusing the bomb.

Hostage Rescue – Counter-Terrorists win by rescuing hostages or by defeating the entire enemy team. Terrorists win by preventing the Counter-Terrorists from rescuing all of the hostages or by holding out until the game time runs out.

Assassination - Terrorists win by assassinating the VIP or eliminating all Counter-Terrorists. Counter Terrorists win by escorting the VIP safely to the rescue point or by eliminating all of the Terrorists.

Team Death Match - Whichever team reaches a predetermined amount of “kills” first wins. Players instantly respawn upon dying.

Death Match - Free for all – whoever gets the most kills before time runs out wins. Players instantly respawn upon dying.

Zombie Modes – Seven different zombie modes (which originally appeared as player mods in the original Counter Strike) are available, including Hero, Mutation, and The Union.

Scenario Modes – These modes, which sometimes cross with other modes, are meant to put players in a specific mode for the duration of the match, and include goals such as Survival, Pursuit, Defense, and Annihilation.

Fun Modes – These modes, which sometimes cross with other modes, are meant to be less competitive and more about having fun. They include Zombie Escape, Soccer, and Bazooka Battle.

Bot Modes- Many of the above game modes, but with bots filling in player roles.

Counter Strike Online Review

Counter-Strike Online, called CSO for short, is a 3D MMOFPS. The game is a remake of the enormously popular Counter-Strike for the Asian gaming audience. Nexon basically took Counter-Strike and re-developed it specifically for Asian gamers by making it free to play, changing the interface and adding numerous RPG elements. Even with the addition of a bunch of new features and tweaks, Counter-Strike Online, in its core, plays almost exactly like the enormously popular original Counter-Strike game.

What the Lag?

As mentioned earlier, Counter-Strike Online was designed for gamers in Asia, and is thus hosted in Asia. Nexon runs the game in South Korea, while Gamania runs the game in China. IAHGames runs the game in Malaysia and Singapore in English, without any IP restrictions. This means that the servers for Counter-Strike Online are located in Malaysia and Singapore, which means even though anyone in the world can play on these servers, there are serious latency issues for those outside of South-East Asia. In an FPS game, low latency is extremely important – so those outside of South East Asia will have difficulty finding games without lag. From my experience, pings of around 200-300 are normal when playing from within the United States. The lag issues unfortunately make the game nearly unplayable from the U.S.

This IS Counter-Strike

I’ve personally played the original Counter-Strike game on Valve’s steam service on and off for over 7 years. In fact, I remember when Steam originally launched and players had to log in through steam to play multiplayer Counter-Strike. I remember before the Steam service launched, anyone could play Counter-Strike for free, as the game never checked the validity of your Counter-Strike CD Key, and you and a dozen friends could share the same bogus key and it wouldn’t matter. That all changed when Steam launched – as Steam required users to have a valid unique serial code for Counter-Strike before being able to play. I thought I’d never see the day that an official version of Counter Strike would launch that’s free to play, but I was wrong. Counter-Strike Online plays almost EXACTLY like the popular Steam version, except with a bunch of new features

New Features in Counter-Strike Online

Counter-Strike Online is exactly like Counter-Strike, except with a new interface (outside of games), new weapons and new game modes. Game modes in Counter-Strike Online include Team Death Match, Deathmatch, Zombie Mode, Challenge Mode, VIP Mode and of course Normal Mode (Plant the bomb / Defuse the bomb). Counter-Strike Online has 8 new weapons and a bunch of new game modes, and is completely free to play. One of the key differences between the original Counter-Strike and Counter-Strike Online is that players in this new version must purchase weapons OUTSIDE of the game (through the lobby store) with in game currency, before being able to use these weapons INSIDE of a game. Much like how a player has to purchase weapons in games like Combat Arms, Sudden Attack and Alliance of Valiant Arms before being able to use them inside of a game. Players earn money in CSO by winning matches, which can be spent on all sorts of accessories and weapons.

This Looks and Feels Familiar

As mentioned earlier, the actual core gameplay in Counter-Strike Online is near identical to the original Counter-Strike game. Teams are broken down into Terrorists vs Counter Terrorists in most game modes and players can purchase weapons at the start of each round (Remember, players can only buy weapons which they bought outside of the game!). Like other “tactical” shooters, players die to gunfire extremely fast and teamwork is essential to doing well online. The graphics in Counter-Strike Online are near identical to the visuals in the Original Counter-Strike and the gameplay is near identical. I say nearly identical, because some of the weapon models are a tad bit different. Perhaps CSO is a bit more Counter Strike: Condition Zero, as the graphics in Counter-Strike Online are a tad bit sharper than the original CS game. The game’s “buy screen” looks a bit different and players can set up their own macros to quickly purchase their own weapons.

Fans of the original Counter-Strike game will be pleased to see many of the original maps in Counter-Strike Online, as maps such as Dust2, Aztec, Italy are all still around in Counter-Strike Online and the game even has some new maps too.

Balanced Gameplay

One of the main reason’s that Counter-Strike has remained enormously popular even 10 years after its release is its balance. Since Counter-Strike Online is based off of the original Counter-Strike game, the maps and weapons all remained well balanced. Unfortunately, even though no weapon is “over powered” some weapons are extremely weak – which is why most people in competitive games stick to using either AK-47s or M4A1s. So many weapons in the game are underpowered to the point of being useless – but this shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone familiar with the Counter-Strike games.

Counter-Strike is most certainly one of the most iconic PC FPS games out there, but even so, it’s not getting any newer. MMOFPS games like Alliance of Valiant Arms, Genesis A.D, and even Cross Fire all have vastly superior graphics. Many of these newer games have more functional user interfaces too, which makes it difficult to recommend Counter-Strike Online to everyone. Anyone who’s looking for a well balanced game should definitely give Counter-Strike Online a try but those concerned with graphics may want to skip this one. The game’s biggest drawback though is its high latency issues. Anyone in the U.S. Or Europe can play Counter-Strike Online, but the lag issues make the game nearly unplayable.

Final Verdict – Good

Counter-Strike is a game that has survived the test of time. The original game was released back in 1999 as a Mod for Half Life as a full retail game in 2000. In 2008 Nexon re-launched it as a free to play game in South Korea and in 2010 the game launched in South-East Asia through IAHGames. Counter-Strike is regarded today as the most balanced and competitive FPS, and is thus well worth checking out. The only major issue with Counter-Strike Online is is latency issues for those outside of South-East Asia. The only reason CSO’s score isn’t higher is its latency problems.
