Aeria Games Interview: New Partnerships & Games
The past two months for Aeria Games have been particularly busy – the company has forged a new partnership to host EA’s Play4Free games (starting with Battlefield Heroes), acquired Punch Entertainment and forged a new mobile gaming division, and has launched a new browser-based MMORTS, Golden Age. MMOHut spoke with JT Nguyen, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Aeria Games, to take a more in-depth look at Aeria Games’ latest successes.
What led up to the partnership between EA and Aeria Games?
There was good synergy between EA and Aeria Games. From our early discussions, it was recognized that both sides were in synch with how to further capitalize on the exploding free to play online game business space. Of course, EA has fantastic content which we felt could complement our own portfolio of games. We’ve been extremely successful with how we’ve operated our business, which I think is what drew EA to us in the first place. They recognized that Aeria Games is very strong on monetization and has an industry-leading ARPPU, so it seemed like a great fit.
How do you plan to draw players into the EA titles as they are added to Aeria’s portal?
Starting with Battlefield Heroes which we launched a few weeks ago, we will market the EA games both externally to new players as well as to Aeria Games’ existing and growing user base of over 24 million distinct power gamers. The Aeria Games audience is very active and engaged, so we feel they will find and enjoy the EA titles when they come to play our games.
What kind of growth do you expect to see with the new business deals with both EA and Punch Entertainment?
Aeria Games has been kind of quietly operating and steadily growing, but we are now in a more aggressive phase of our business which is exciting for us. EA represents Aeria Games’ first major distribution deal with a Western developer. We will continue to expand our portfolio with Western-developed content and are in discussion with a number of such potential partners. We established our first in-house mobile game development studio with the acquisition of the team from Punch Entertainment, which we’re very excited about. We will continue to develop and publish mobile and browser games, whether in-house or externally.

Why does Aeria Games want to head into the mobile gaming market?
Aeria Games has a tremendously valuable user base of over 24 million power gamers. Our players like to play high quality and engaging games–whether on their PCs at home, or on their mobile devices while riding a train, or in the mall waiting for their significant others to shop. Further, our players are very versed of the free-to-play, virtual-item-transaction gaming model. Expanding into mobile is a natural extension as Aeria Games continues to grow. Our goal is to become the leading destination for free-to-play multiplayer games, whether the games are on the PC, browser, or mobile platforms.
Does Aeria Games still plan to appeal to less casual gamers in the mobile gaming market?
At least initially, our focus on mobile will be on hardcore to medium core games, which is the bulk of our players, all with a multiplayer focus. (The less casual mobile games that we have launched to date are mostly for test-marketing purposes.)
What kind of integration between MMOs and mobile devices would Aeria like to see?
We would love to see games that can be played across devices. For example: A player playing a PC client game can play a minigame on his smartphone to level up his character while he is away from his computer. He then brings the leveled up character back to the PC client game.
Aeria Games already shows a broad portfolio of game genres, but what kind of games would you like to add to diversify it further?
Our goal is to become the leading destination for free-to-play multiplayer games, whether the games are on the PC, browser, or mobile platforms. We’re not looking for any particular type of genre to expand our portfolio; instead we look at opportunities to bring great experiences to lots of players with a good revenue model.
Eden Eternal Gameplay Screenshot
What do you do to encourage players to spend more time per day in game?
We select games with compelling gameplay, and we strive to create fun and supportive communities, backed with excellent customer service. We find that compelling in-game events and competitions help, too.
How do you keep your players involved, even when they’re not in game?
We are increasing our communication efforts to our communities, including direct emails, newsletters, and updates. We also reach out with posts to our Facebook community.
What is the key into drawing new players into Aeria Games?
With the rapid growth of social media gaming in recent years, the potential audience for our games has expanded enormously. The key is communicating the benefits of our downloadable games, and showing that we have games for a wide range of interests, from more casual and anime-themed games like Eden Eternal and Grand Fantasia, to more intense fantasy and PVP games like Shaiya and Last Chaos, to action games like our FPS Wolf Team.
What is the biggest lesson Aeria Games has learned in the past five years in the North American market?
It’s been an amazing five years for us. We have definitely learned a lot but also had a lot of successes, all of which we thank our loyal players for. I say this because the biggest lesson we’ve learned from has been how to balance the business needs with the player needs, with the latter being the anchor for us. We are extremely data driven in terms of how we operate as a business, as well as how we monitor and react to our player needs and behavior. This is of course common practice for online game companies but for Aeria Games, I think our ability to both anticipate and react timely to our players to ensure an engaging and robust experience has been what has helped us to stand apart from others.
Golden Age Gameplay Screenshot
What do you feel Golden Age brings to the Aeria Games portfolio?
Well, off the bat, Golden Age is exclusive to us so the only place you can play the game is on Aeria Games, which we’re extremely excited about as it’s a great game. For those not familiar with Golden Age, it is an innovative browser game with refined gameplay, combining an expansive strategy game with roleplaying elements. It pushes forward the web Real-Time Strategy genre with upgrades in graphics, in-game systems, and player options. Golden Age has done well for us in the short amount of time since its launch, and we’ve got high hopes for it in terms of translating to another global hit for Aeria Games. We will have more exciting news to share about Golden Age in the coming weeks/months, but for now are focused on delivering a great game to our players.
What features may be in the works for Golden Age to make it stand out even more as a browser-based strategy game?
We have a number of projects underway to expand the game even further. We are working on the interactive RPG town, Sanctum City, where players receive quests from a motley assortment of NPCs or meet and greet other players using Golden Age‘s innovative avatar system in the town center. We also have real-time map data where players can boost strategy options with three map modes. This will help determine the movement direction of enemy troops and whether a castle is under attack, among other detailed map data. Last but not least, we have our Battlefield tournament system. Battlefield is a recurring in-game tourney where players can demonstrate their abilities without risking their valuable units and losing troops in the normal persistent world.

That’s really rude. Personally, I like Aeria’s games, though sometimes when it comes to announcing new games and going into CBT for some games, it can be chaotic and extremely slow. Other than that, I love them dearly and always play MegaTen and Grand Fantasia.

all aeria game is bad, they worst whatever game can be.Aeria games could be liked by ppl who age range in 7-13,but im 18 so i really hate aeria games.

I have to agree, their support system is lacking, if you can call it a “support system”. There’s also the point of unoriginal games that don’t really stand out from the crowd.

Unfortunately, regardless of what anyone says AGE will always find new and interesting way to screw over their F2P market…They did it with MegaTen by dropping the income game from farming the orbs out in the wilds…
They did it with Kingdom Heroes when they slowly phased out ANYTHING that made F2P gains impossible, I’m sorry but when you go from having anything on the IM available to SLOWLY gain in the game to having absolutely NONE of it available, then drop the prices of things you gain a lot of to 1 bronze or w/e they call it each…It’s horrible…Now don’t get me wrong, I do spend money on my F2P games…But when they make a GREAT game like Kingdom Heroes a case of “Hey drop $100 per week in this game and be a tactician so you’ll be unstoppable forever…It makes the game not worth playing any more…
The OPTION to pay money should NEVER give you a VERY CLEAR advantage over the F2P players…A lot of other developers are beginning to realize this and are making games where the option to play gives you a decent advantage but doesn’t make you unstoppable, this is where AGE needs to focus, but of course they are owned by penny pinching jack asses who have nothing to do with their days than work out more ways to screw over the little guys…This is why I began boycotting AGE games and why I still do…
No matter who you are, unless you have $2,000 per month to drop into one of their games you will always be a nobody…Worse still is that I used to BE one of those people yet I got reported for 1 cuss word in my OWN guild chat, which as you know is against AGE ToS…I protested the permanent ban as it was a first offense and basically my own stupidity…To which the email I got in return was “If you send $5,000 to our corporate account we will unban your account”…
Look back on AGE bans on Last Chaos for instance, this is a very well documented business tactic of theirs, ban people who throw so much money at them it’s insane then ask for MORE money to unban them…I don’t know if the company is owned by the Chinese, I never looked into it…But their business ethics certainly seem to suggest that they are…

Hopefully more people will start to realize how amazing Aeria is.

@#6
Are you kidding me?! This is not even an interview. It’s a bunch of studied in Q&A’s.
Either way Aeria has always been a shit company. EA Probably just wanted to get rid of BF: Heroes, and who can blame em. All that talk about synergy is a bunch of bs. Aeria paid the right price, that’s all there is to it.
Still, some of Aeria’s games have been able to entertain me, some good stuff out there – But never for long. Because like specified in above comments, if you wan’t to be someone, you need to pay up. And alot. Skill, time and devotion play no role, balance wise.
Luckily more and more balance comes to modern F2P titles. Where payers may be able to advance alot quicker, earn more, pay less, etc… But where 2 people of the same level and skill are actually matched even if 1 of them pays 20$/m.
World of Tanks is one such game. Extremely balanced in p2p vs f2p. Biggest advantage p2p gets is 50% more exp/credits. Still, there’s a few cases even there were payers can get a nasty advantage, with the use of premium ammo for each shot fired – but few people do this, mostly fat 12 year old rich kids. Most premium ammo is used for tactical situations where they use just a few shots when no other choice, or clan warfare (Where payment can basicly be in “Gold” which is the premium currency. Which also makes it possible not to pay at all and still get premium benefits – only for the extremely dedicated ones, though.(getting top tiers is a bitch without premium))
Champions Online is another such game. As a f2p user you cannot make a custom class and only few of the preset classes are available, but with enough dedication you can take on plenty custom classes with a well developed f2p class of comparable skill and level.

Aeria is a company but it has many flaws in it’s systems for accounts. GM’s don’t really help with anything other then promote their item mall stuff. Company is corrupted as the U.S government. If you like Aeriagames good for you but I wouldn’t waste my time and money on that company on how poor they treat people’s accounts and customers.
November 11, 2011
#10
I completely disagree with what you said, Falloftiger.
Whenever my accounts have been unjustly banned due to server suspicions (unforeseen circumstances like my power suddenly blacking out have resulted in this), I have always managed to contact Aeria’s Customer Service and receive support within 72 hours, max.
There have also been other instances where I needed aid and they were very quick to respond and resolve the issue. I have never had to wait more than three days to receive a response to a sent ticket and, on average, waited just one day.

So people really wake up and say “I WANT TO TROLL TODAY”? if u aint got nothing constructive to say just stfu…”on topic” …ive played all of the older games from aeria starting with last chaos and it was addicting and the newest ive played is eden eternal which was the same but different..yea it seems like the games arent meant for hardcore gamers but oh well…though luck stop bitching
November 11, 2011
#12
Exactly, If you played the games they have as long as I have you would know. Still you at the point where its still “addicting”. You wouldn’t know unless you actually know what they’re doing. Anything that is where they are at fault they wouldn’t responded to you or even answer questions about your account to you cause of the privacy or whatever. You guys have no idea how easy it is to take someone account on their site with basic or little info one someone you know. Like it or not I’m not trolling I’m just saying that company is making a bad choice to team up with Aeria. This is my view of the company. You say it’s good, I say it’s bad. Nothing’s perfect. All their games is broken with the with or without item mall anyways.

I actually like Aeria games, but they support is really terrible, almost cruel. I lost my account, with many lvled characters, just because my friend logged into it once. They said ‘we don’t support shared accounts’, but I saw nothing about this on terms of service. I just realized I would never get it back when the shit was already done. All my tentatives of explain what actually happened were just ignored, even when they could see my friend never logged into it again, and not even started the game, just opened the main screen to see if my account was ok. I like the games, but Aeria is a pretty much a careless company.

“were in synch with how to further capitalize on the exploding free to play online game business space” – Doesn’t make sense. If all of you are still falling for “free to play” scam, then I have an online poker site I want you to go too…. or I want to sell you Poop in a box, youl like it. Trust me. I put a sword on it.
“Oh but poopeye, they need to stay in business” – Actually no, most of these companies already pay for temselves with internet references (like Facebook). Especially if they have a box retail version. You pay for nothing but their hookers, cocaine, and the need to stay out of a REAL job: HEre is basically what you pay for: ” I say this because the biggest lesson we’ve learned from has been how to balance the business needs with the player needs, with the latter being the anchor for us. We are extremely data driven in terms of how we operate as a business, as well as how we monitor and react to our player needs and behavior. ” – Their data accountants to tell them how to market to your dumb ass. (Get them hooked, harge them later)
MMORPG market is dead and over. Sorry, but SKYRIM, and other box titles are the best experience you will ever have. Unless of course you want to pay to kill 20 wolves for several months on end, you can pay for this garbage.

Personally, I like AeriaGames games. I’ve played most of them, got into EE as it started, and had a blast with my Sprites on GF, and never really had a complaint. Working with EA though means I’ll have to expect more from them, but I have high hopes I won’t be disappointed.

I like Aeria Games to, They never hurt me and allways give me fun times with his games so yeah i don’t have any problems with Aeria
Actually i think is one of the best F2P games company out there seriously, they have a lot of games, update all and support system isn’t bad. Compared to other companies i think they are realy goo and if you compared to Nexon they are Perfect
Nice topic and continue the good job

“So people really wake up and say “I WANT TO TROLL TODAY”? if u aint got nothing constructive to say just stfu…”on topic” …ive played all of the older games from aeria starting with last chaos and it was addicting and…”
You ignorants should stop using the word “addicting” as if it means a good thing for a game, because if a game “addicts” you it doesn’t mean it’s good, it means you are a weak person that gets easily taken by an “hobby”.
Making ti simple: addicting = you have a dependence (get cured), the game isn’t necessarily good.

To make sure everyone reads.
Addicting = you have a dependence (get cured), the game isn’t necessarily good.
Moreover, you should go back to school and learn words since most of you play games instead of studying thus becoming ignorants, like that dude.

Aeria games is alright. Got into Grand Fantasia. Working with EA means they have to rise their standards from what they already give. And that is to be disappointed, Because in my days of playing Aeria Games, It was a totally disappointment, due the Events they host The GameSages(Moderators in other words) and they never think outside the box at all.

Aeria is the leading company in the f2p genre.. What else is better? This is closest I been to a GM in all the games I played, You can have a friendly talk with them. The games are becoming better everyday, month, year. However, like any other profitable company they tend to depend on there cash shops. The ticket system, you get a reply back 3 days max. The rules are bit strict and warnings are scarce, but I don’t see anyone hacking in there games, goldfarmers, and spamming. I don’t see anything wrong with Aeria games then Financial Difficulty, and rules are strict. Just because you got banned for being stupid, don’t troll them.

Skyrim $59.99 best game you can play atm.
Aeria $59.99 worth of AP on their tiers that is repeated or will be outdated next week.
Saying you don’t have to pay to play Aeria games is like saying you don’t have to have toilet paper when taking a dump.
common sense people…
Derp…

Well… in that case after I do #2 I take a bath…in the sink

the games themselves are somewhat okay, ee is fun. but the management is pathetic, be ready to get your account banned for a petty reason or worse no reason at all!!! and dont think having bought aeria points(AP) with real money would get you better service, because it wont matter at all!! once they got the money, they dont care about you.

Got to say I really dislike Aeria games. Its enough they do their best to make money off anything but they love banning any one who says anything about it. Playing a few of their games my self their sites are over ran with gold sellers and no ‘support’ form GMs or their so called ‘team. Its sad is their games can be interesting and fun but seems like always they die out or just enough problems to drive people away

I personally wont be playing BF anymore.

Yeah, Aeria makes up most of the worst mmorpg’s out there. I may be biased, but I absolutely hate the gameplay, graphics, and quests that they put into their games. I don’t like Japanese games because they don’t make any sense at all. You go into town and there are people on roofs and in the sky riding swords or some crap. Aeria games remind me of japanese mmorpg’s. That is the only reason I don’t like them.

Aeria Games sucks
The GMs suck, the GS are all attention ho’s
They are obsessed with making profit to a point where they ruin their games and spam you to buy. It just becomes P2W basically (ex. DOMO)
They fail to keep their games updated as compared to other established companies
They are definitely not original, they just copy everyone else, only decent game they have is Eden Eternal

seeing lots of rants here..lots and lots… sadly i’m seeing alot of bad rants here..lots of well formed praise..
*
aside from the occasional “i like aeria they not hurt me,i like them good service make smile to me.mom says smiles good too,i like aeriagames” but only saw 1 or 2 like that.
alot of repeat outplayed arguments too. i’m not a hater of aeria specificly.i’m a hater of all things in this world that have no quality to them. aeria is anouther company creating online escapes from reality, they are also anouther company who’s games are so god awfull that i question whats worse..(reality or fantasy) they will forever partner up and expand to create a steady flow of shit. all f2p companys, and all buisnesses in any field will forever do this. shit costs less than gold. that’s obviouse, they found a way to sell shit for x1000 price of gold.good for them. if they continue to grow and expand with your money it WILL be thanks to YOU when they drown to death in a pile of thier own solid-gold shit.*haha..i’d die ROFLing if i saw on the news”all companys putting out shity products drown in a huge shit flood today”

im not gonna lie, aeria games are ok…just ok, not all that, and not all that bad…there ok…..but the games are jus repetitive…yea there free in sum ways, but daam, i wish they would jus think outside of the box….ive spent 20 dollars on shaiya….and that was abt 2 years ago…ive still hvnt use the money on my account yet lol…i left that game, nd the company lol…but ima take a look at that eden eternal n see whts up, see if its even worth a download.

Ok i wont say areia games is the best ever but they are definitely at the top of the F2p publishing game so this leads me to say “haters gonna hate” If you dont like game or company of whatever nothing is gonna change by raging about them for the rest of your life. I dont play any of their games anymore but id say the are above any other company in amount of games and content and keeping things fresh. Only 2 others come to mind that in my opinion are better is perfect world and nexon. Ijji too i guess

Aeria Games are sometimes annoying, all thanks to its events (Buy Aeria Points or don’t even think of joining…), but other than that I have to say it’s quite fine. Economy in SMT:Imagine sure is outrageous (anything for at least 300 000 Macca and more) and if you want to have anything you need to farm (and for ‘Storm Trooper’ suit like it’s quite…).
