Turbine first announced its intentions to make The Lord of the Rings Online free to play several weeks ago, but it used this year’s PAX Convention as an opportunity to release a new trailer for their hobbit infested MMORPG. LOTRO isn’t the first Turbine game to go free to play, last year they converted Dungeons and Dragons Online from a subscription based to free to play title. That gamble payed off and the game enjoyed a renaissance. Will Lord of the Rings Online be as successful under F2P? There’s no way to tell, but I’m betting on success. Other formerly pay to play games are making the switch, including EverQuest 2: Extended. This latest trailer is about 1:30 long and does a great job introducing new players to the game.
