RvR Map: Worlds Apart

5/5 on the Bat Shit Crazy Meter

When Mark Jacobs interrupted an on-stream interview to begin the RvR map presentation, with the riddle “When is a puzzle more than just a puzzle?” we knew the real crazy was about to hit the fan. What was described and shown next was definitely the most exciting reveal we’d see all week. After all, in any PvP, the map layout makes a huge impact on the entire game.

RVR Map United

Though not in a final stage, this map represents the core world of Camelot Unchained, in its whole state. Each of the three realms has its own large area on the far edge of the map; in the center is the fabled city of Camelot. The rest of the world is divided roughly into rings, and each ring into pieces; the closer to the center, the smaller the section. But this isn’t just a center-zerg map, because those aren’t zones…

… they’re islands. Thinking of each as a puzzle piece, you can see that the three realm specific areas are the largest. These areas are safe zones for each realm, and cannot be attacked by other realms. Beyond these are landing areas, larger pieces of land which will serve as anchor pieces; followed by major pieces, containing places of power; followed by minor pieces, which contain some resources. Each puzzle piece will be unique, and may change from player actions and veilstorms, and each may be captured. Pieces can be traveled to, initially, through flights and boats.

As players capture pieces, they may place stabilizers on the land to claim it. Claimed land begins to take on your realm’s specific personality, and rewards will be granted to realms for capturing and holding these lands. Claimed land will cost players taxes and maintenance, but will also reward them with materials and income. Different structures can be built, allowing realms and players to customize the pieces they own and strategize for both expansion and defense. The more land a realm owns, the more it benefits everyone.

As more land on the piece is claimed, stabilizers can be moved to progress the capture and transformation of the area. These stabilizers also draw in other nearby map pieces marked with your realm’s stabilizers. What does this mean? Well over time the map shifts and changes according to each realm’s activity. In short, the map of each server will be in constant flux as realms vie for control.RvR Map Shifting

As realms draw closer, players will find shorter travel times between sections, and even have the possibility of building bridges between sections that are close enough. Roads and infrastructure can be improved to help realms keep and maintain the lands they have – assuming they can defend them.

A dynamic world, veil storms, moving landmasses, naval warfare, craftable bridges, realm pride, server identity – we think you’re seeing why we’re rating this max on the BSC Meter. It’s hard not to be excited about the game, even if skeptical. Camelot Unchained’s RvR concept, its master battleground, is definitely the most epic PvP MMO concept we’ve ever heard of.
