WoW Midnight’s Talebound Mode Sends Players Through Four Roguelike Horror Stories

World of Warcraft: Midnight is getting a new roguelike story mode called Talebound, arriving with the Echoes of the Worldcore content update. Blizzard says an early preview is planned for the PTR sometime in October.

Talebound can be played solo or with friends, with players entering dark, self-contained “tales” built around themed levels, enemies, bosses, puzzles, treasure, relics, and run-based rewards. Between runs, players return to Quillgrave, a small village that acts as the mode’s hub for upgrades and preparation.

The mode launches with four stories, each with its own setting and boss lineup:

  • Darkhaven, featuring Konrad von Sonnesheim, The Lord Marshal, and Alexandre Dozsenc, The Blood Bishop.
  • Greenthistle Wood, with Granny Greenthumb, Ylska Vilefang, and Mobog, The Giant of Greenthistle.
  • Greywake’s Expedition, centered on deep-sea threats Zzyg’th, The Hadal Tyrant, and Chathoa, The Herald from Beyond.
  • Grove of the Night Court, featuring Tilywth, The Fairy Queen, and Maernok, The Nightmare King.

Talebound also uses its own class setup. Blizzard outlined three so far: Slayer, Inquisitor, and Witch. All classes can double jump, dodge, and guard, so movement and positioning are a big part of combat rather than just standing still and cycling abilities.

The Slayer mixes sword attacks, firearms, mines, knives, and a silver bolt finisher. The Inquisitor focuses on holy fire, slowing enemies, and spells that can be cast while moving. The Witch leans into poison, lightning, spiders, ravens, thorns, and even a temporary cat form for mobility.

Quillgrave’s upgrade vendors include the Arcanist, Scribe, Outfitter, and Antiquarian. They’ll help players improve future runs with new consumables, altered abilities, better starting stats, and passive bonuses.

Rewards include the Witch Hunter’s Shadow Attire transmog set, Quillgrave-themed housing decor, and the Shadowbound Storybook mount. Blizzard hasn’t given a live release date for Talebound yet, but the October PTR preview should give players the first real look at how the mode plays.
