Riot Still Calls Its Runeterra MMO a “Worthy Quest,” but There’s No Reveal Yet

Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill gave a small status check on the studio’s long-in-development Runeterra MMO during his PAX West 2026 Storytime keynote with Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller. Riot later posted a clip on September 5 with the caption, “So about that MMO we’re building…”

Merrill didn’t announce a title, release window, trailer, screenshots, or gameplay details. Instead, he framed the MMO as a project where Riot already understands what fans want, but still has to prove it can actually deliver.

“We know what players’ hopes and dreams are,” Merrill said. “It’s just on us, as a team and people, can we succeed in the execution? What a worthy quest.”

He also said Riot jokingly refers to the untitled MMO internally as “The Grail,” a nod to how difficult the genre can be. His point was pretty straightforward: MMOs are risky, expensive, and hard to get right, but Riot still sees the potential prize as worth chasing.

The comments come after Riot’s 2024 creative reset on the project, when the studio said it was rethinking parts of the game rather than continuing on its original path. Riot has also kept hiring for senior roles, including World of Warcraft veteran Brian Holinka as principal designer earlier in 2026.

Merrill has previously suggested he expects the MMO to ship before 2030, but Riot hasn’t committed to a firm date. For now, the message is mostly that the Runeterra MMO is still alive, still ambitious, and still not ready for a proper reveal.
