LOTRO Explains Survival Instincts Progression in Wolves of Mordor
Standing Stone Games has shared more details on Survival Instincts, the new alternate advancement system coming with The Lord of the Rings Online’s Wolves of Mordor expansion. The system is tied to Draugardh, the expansion’s new region, and gives players a set of zone-specific traits, skills, tactics, and upgrades to build around while questing and running endgame content there.
Survival Instincts will live in a new tab in the Trait panel once the expansion launches. Early in Draugardh, players meet emissaries from three local groups: the Khemozêl, the Scouts of Draugardh, and the Têtikir. Each group teaches a trait that unlocks three skills usable only in Draugardh, and every class can learn all of them.
The Khemozêl lean into defense, healing, and wolfhound support. The Scouts focus on battlefield tools like wound recovery, arrow volleys, and guaranteed critical strikes. The Têtikir bring storm-themed attacks, morale and power recovery, and critical damage boosts.
The system also includes tactics, lessons, and enhancement traits. Players can slot three tactics, one lesson, and up to four enhancements, depending on what they’ve unlocked and improved. Lessons are longer-cooldown effects, including a chance to summon wolfhounds, trigger a tougher enemy encounter with better treasure, or find extra Draugardh-specific loot.
The biggest progression detail is that Survival Instincts is account-wide on the same server. The first character to finish the short tutorial unlocks the basic Survival Instincts skills and lessons for all characters on that server. Other characters who complete the tutorial instead earn points for a shared pool, which can be spent on improving enhancements and tactics.
Players will earn Survival Instincts progress through several Wolves of Mordor activities, including cultural group quests, landscape chests, weekly missions, reputation barter, special encounters, instances, and the raid. Standing Stone says the system is meant to grow over time, so more ways to earn points may be added later.
Survival Instincts will also connect to crafting and group content. Crafters can make new essences that enhance the system, while instances can reward items that modify Survival Instincts skills. The studio says those items won’t be required to clear encounters, but they should help in tougher fights.
Separately, the Buried Treasure event is also back in LOTRO from October 1 through around October 5 or 6, giving players another short window to dig up rewards while waiting on the expansion.
