Jagex reveals RS4, a new RuneScape MMO built in Unreal Engine

Jagex has announced RS4, a new RuneScape MMORPG currently in early development and built in Unreal Engine. The studio showed the project during RuneFest 2026 on October 3, saying the name is only a working title for now.

The game is set in Gielinor during the Sixth Age, with the adventure starting in Ashenfall, the landmass introduced in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Jagex says RS4 takes place years after Dragonwilds and the fall of the Dragon Queen Kuldra, though Ashenfall is only meant to be the starting point. The plan is for the MMO to expand into familiar and new parts of Gielinor over time.

Jagex is also trying to set expectations early. RS4 is “a few years away,” and the studio isn’t ready to talk about platforms, accounts, membership, combat, skills, or when players can try it. More details are planned for next year, including how the community can get involved in development.

The studio stressed that RS4 is not replacing RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, or Dragonwilds. Instead, it’s being positioned as another standalone RuneScape game alongside the existing lineup, with its own team and direction.

For now, players can register interest through the sign-up page. Jagex says permanent progression, game integrity, and community feedback will be central to the project, but the real shape of RS4 is still mostly under wraps.
