Guild Wars 2’s New WvW Borderlands Map Gets a Gray-Box Beta on November 10
Guild Wars 2 is getting its first new World vs. World Borderlands map in more than a decade, and players will be able to try an early version on November 10. ArenaNet says the first beta will use a gray-box build, meaning the map won’t have final art or assets yet. The point is to test the layout while it’s still easy to change.
During the beta, all existing Borderlands maps will be replaced by the new test map so WvW players spend as much time on it as possible. Longer term, ArenaNet plans for the finished map to permanently replace the current Green Alpine Borderlands, giving each Borderlands map its own theme.
The new map is set in Ascalon during the Searing, pulling from both pre-Searing and post-Searing versions of the region. ArenaNet says it will include ties to humans and the charr from that era, though the studio is keeping the first test focused on how the map plays rather than final presentation or extra systems.
That means no new map mechanics in the first beta. ArenaNet specifically said it wants feedback on travel times, objective placement, navigation, and where fights naturally happen. It’s a deliberate shift from the Desert Borderlands rollout, where the map was shown much later in development and shipped with several new mechanics at once.
More betas are planned after this first round, with layout and objective changes based on player feedback. ArenaNet may test new map or objective mechanics later, but only after it’s happy with the basic flow of the battlefield.
