Final Fantasy XIV is now on Switch 2 with a free trial and temporary subscription waiver

Final Fantasy XIV has launched on Nintendo Switch 2, giving players another way to play Square Enix’s long-running MMO. The Switch 2 version includes access to the existing free trial, and players who buy the game get an extra subscription break at launch.

According to the official Lodestone post, subscription fees for purchased Switch 2 editions are being waived for “approximately one month” while Square Enix monitors the launch. After that period ends, the usual 30 days of game time included with a purchased copy will begin.

The free trial is handled separately on the Nintendo eShop, so new players should make sure they’re downloading the trial version rather than buying an edition by mistake. The trial still has no playtime limit and includes the base game plus three expansions. Its Nintendo eShop page is separate from the paid releases.

Paid options on Switch 2 include the Starter Edition, Complete Edition, and Complete Collector’s Edition. Once the launch waiver and included game time are used up, Switch 2 players will need a subscription for that platform. Square Enix lists the usual FFXIV subscription pricing at $12.99 for the Entry plan, $14.99 monthly for the Standard plan, or $77.94 for 180 days.

There’s one notable discount: players who already have paid game time on another platform, including Square Enix’s own launcher, Steam, PlayStation, or Xbox, can get the Switch 2 subscription at half price.

The Switch 2 version uses a new payment currency called FFXIV Coins, purchased through the Nintendo eShop. Those coins can also be used on Mog Station, though Square Enix’s post doesn’t fully spell out every cross-platform use case.

Nintendo Switch Online is not required to play Final Fantasy XIV online. Players who do have it will get an extra free aetheryte destination while playing on Switch 2.

One thing to double-check before logging in: a Square Enix account can only be linked to one Nintendo account. If you’re bringing over an existing character, make sure it’s tied to the right account before you commit.
