Final Fantasy XI’s free trial is being expanded to level 75

Final Fantasy XI is expanding its free trial in a pretty big way. Producer and director Yoji Fujito confirmed that trial players will soon be able to level all the way to 75, which was the game’s old cap during its early years.

That’s a notable jump for the long-running MMORPG, especially since the current trial already includes the full base game. Moving the cap to 75 means free players will be able to see a lot more of the classic FFXI experience before needing to subscribe.

The change matters because level 75 was a defining point in Final Fantasy XI’s history. For a lot of longtime players, that was the era of party grinding, older endgame goals, and the version of Vana’diel they remember most clearly. Letting trial users reach that point gives newcomers a much better sense of what the game actually is, instead of cutting them off earlier.

Fujito confirmed the plan, but the source excerpt doesn’t include a release date for when the higher cap will go live. There’s also no pricing change mentioned here, just the expanded access for trial accounts.

Final Fantasy XI first launched in 2002 and is still running more than two decades later, even after Final Fantasy XIV became Square Enix’s main MMO. It’s a very different game from XIV, slower and more group-focused by design, and this trial bump looks like another attempt to make that older style easier to sample.
