EVE Online Players Should Check In With Old Agents Before Python 3 Migration

EVE Online’s long-running move from Python 2 to Python 3 is going to touch one very old part of the MMO: NPC agent memory. The dev team says most players won’t notice anything, but anyone sitting on old agent missions or research jobs should revisit those agents before the final cleanup happens.

The short version: agent interactions saved before 29 September 2026 need to be refreshed if players want that specific mission or research progress carried forward. Requesting a new mission, completing or failing an existing one, or doing a mission for a Research agent from now on will save that agent’s memory in the new format.

NPC standings are not being wiped. Unlocked agents will stay unlocked, even if a character doesn’t log in or isn’t Omega. The change is about old mission state stored in the database, not a character’s broader relationship with NPC corporations, factions, or agents.

This matters most for players with abandoned mission offers, accepted missions they never finished, or Research agents generating Research Points from an old setup. Research agents need a quick check-in: complete at least one mission with each affected agent, per character, to keep that job active in the new system.

There’s no firm date yet for the actual deletion of untouched legacy agent data. The team says the Python 3 migration is still months away from that stage, and affected players will get reminders before the old memory is cleared.

Behind the scenes, EVE’s agent data has been stored for years as Python 2 “pickle” blobs in the database. That worked, but it made the data hard to search and tied it to an aging Python version. New and updated agent memories are now being saved in both the old format and a newer, more future-proof one while the migration continues.

Some data will be moved automatically, including certain one-time tutorial and epic arc mission records. For everyone else, the advice is simple enough: if there’s an agent you care about, especially a Research agent, go talk to them and run a mission before the old records are eventually cleared.
