Elder Scrolls Online pushes Update 52, class refreshes, and new trial into 2027
The Elder Scrolls Online is moving several planned features into 2027 as ZeniMax Online Studios adjusts after the recent Xbox layoffs. Game Director Nick Giacomini said in a new letter that the team is now smaller, so some dates are shifting rather than cutting quality to hit the old roadmap.
Update 51 is still coming in September, but it has been pushed back one week to September 28. Bigger items are moving further out, including Update 52, the Crimson Veldt trial, and ongoing class and combat refresh work.
- Update 51 arrives September 28 with the Rumors system, player experience improvements, and the Nowhere Vault challenge.
- Update 52 is now planned for January 2027.
- The next class and combat refresh is being pushed into next year, with the team looking at possible interim options for classes still waiting.
- The Crimson Veldt trial is also delayed, partly due to its scope and planned mounted combat.
- Season Two launches October 21.
Giacomini is now leading the studio alongside longtime ZOS developer Josh Henderson. ZeniMax Online Studios will also work more closely with Bethesda Game Studios on The Elder Scrolls as a wider franchise, though the message is that ESO itself is still being actively built, not simply maintained.
Some of the near-term Season Two plans remain on track. Solo dungeons will debut with Moon Hunter Keep and March of Sacrifices, while the group versions of both dungeons become free for all players starting October 12. Greymoor and Markarth will also be made free on November 9.
The team says more details are coming over the next few months, including new Skyrim-related experiences. For now, the clearest takeaway is that ESO’s 2026 roadmap is still moving, but the heavier lifts are being pushed into 2027.
