Clash of Kings Overview
Clash of Kings: Last Empire is a mobile strategy MMO for iOS and Android developed by the Chinese studio ELEX Wireless. The opening drops you into a war scenario where you break through defenses and claim a castle as your starting base, which quickly becomes the center of your long-term progression. From there, the game funnels you into a guided tutorial that walks through the essentials of the genre: placing and upgrading buildings, producing and harvesting resources, training troops, researching upgrades, and sending units out to fight.
Moment to moment, Clash of Kings plays in the familiar real-time city builder format popularized by games like Game of War. You juggle timers, optimize your layout, and decide whether your next push is economic growth, military scaling, or defensive preparation. A notable parallel is the Hero system, which leans into light RPG customization by letting you equip gear and use the hero as a centerpiece for combat-oriented progression. The Alliance layer is also central, since it provides assistance with build timers, group activities, and coordinated wars that are difficult to tackle solo. Despite the similar naming, Clash of Kings is not connected to Clash of Clans.
Clash of Kings Key Features:
- Build an Empire – develop a real-time city where growth and vulnerability happen at the same time, since enemies can strike around the clock.
- Join an Alliance – team up with an organized group for construction support, event participation, and coordinated attacks against rival Alliances and their cities.
- Gear Up a Hero – outfit your Hero with armor and use them as a leader for combat and progression-focused play.
- Research Trees – construct a College and invest research into one of four tracks: City Development, Resources, City Defense and Military branches.
- PvP Focus – scout nearby targets, raid enemy players, and chase event rankings and rewards that encourage regular conflict.

Clash of Kings Review
Clash of Kings: Last Empire fits squarely into the mobile “kingdom builder” MMO mold, with an emphasis on long-term account growth, Alliance politics, and frequent PvP. If you enjoy managing timers, planning resource flow, and coordinating with a group to pressure a server, there is a lot here to keep you busy. If you prefer fair matchmaking and purely skill-driven competition, the monetization and power gaps can become frustrating.
Base-building and progression
Your city is the core of everything, with upgrades unlocking more production, stronger troops, and access to deeper systems. The early game is approachable, largely because the tutorial and UI clearly nudge you toward the next logical step. As you climb, the pace shifts toward longer build times and heavier dependence on planning, speed-ups, and Alliance support. This creates the genre’s typical rhythm: short bursts of activity, followed by waiting, followed by strategic decisions about what to queue next.
Combat, world map activity, and events
On the world map, you will spend time fighting NPC threats, gathering, scouting, and launching attacks on other cities. Combat tends to be more about preparation than execution, your troop composition, research levels, hero gear, and timing matter more than any manual control. The game leans on recurring events and rankings to keep the server moving, which can be motivating for competitive players, but also nudges you toward constant participation if you want to keep pace.
Hero gear and research as power multipliers
The Hero system and the four research branches are major sources of strength, and they are also where the game’s sense of progression is most visible. Improving your gear and stacking research bonuses makes your army feel meaningfully stronger over time. The downside is that these systems can amplify power differences between players, especially when combined with premium items and faster progression paths.
Alliance play is not optional
Clash of Kings is significantly better with a good Alliance. Assistance mechanics help reduce wait times, and coordinated play opens up large objectives and more rewarding conflict. Socially, this is where the game shines, diplomacy, territory disputes, and server-wide rivalries can create memorable moments. Playing alone is possible early on, but it becomes increasingly limiting as the server matures.
Monetization and technical rough spots
Like many strategy MMOs on mobile, Clash of Kings includes pay-to-win pressure, particularly in competitive environments where spending accelerates growth and strengthens combat outcomes. Additionally, the game’s long history shows through in occasional bugs and inconsistent polish. The presentation is generally strong for the genre, but the experience can feel uneven depending on your device, server activity, and how aggressively you pursue PvP.
Overall, Clash of Kings is best suited for players who enjoy community-driven strategy games and do not mind a progression race. It delivers a solid loop of building, upgrading, and warring, but its competitive balance and technical issues can be hard to ignore.
