XL Games Sells ArcheAge IP and ArcheAge S Business to Kakao-Backed Align Studio

XL Games is selling the ArcheAge IP and the development business for ArcheAge S to Align Studio, a Kakao Games-funded developer, in a deal worth 39.2 billion won. The transfer agreement was signed on September 8, with the handoff currently set for October 27.

The corrected filing, submitted through South Korea’s DART disclosure system on September 9, clarifies what’s included in the sale. ArcheAge S and the broader ArcheAge intellectual property are part of the deal. ArcheAge Chronicles, however, is not listed as a development business being transferred, which suggests XL Games is still handling that project for now.

The numbers in the added appendix break the deal into two main pieces: 28.896 billion won for the ArcheAge S development business and 9.867 billion won for the ArcheAge IP. The filing also includes related assets, contracts, staff, and liabilities tied to the transfer. XL Games said the move is meant to secure liquidity and improve its financial position.

There’s one important wrinkle. While the ArcheAge Chronicles development business is not named as a transferred asset, trademarks related to ArcheAge Chronicles appear in the IP list. So the situation isn’t as simple as “Chronicles stays entirely with XL Games.” Based on what’s been disclosed, the project itself remains with XL Games, but the larger ArcheAge IP is moving to Align Studio. The filing does not explain what legal or licensing setup will let XL Games continue developing or operating Chronicles after the IP changes hands.

Align Studio is reportedly led by producer Kim Kyung-tae, who oversaw ArcheAge S at XL Games and previously worked as lead designer and producer on the original ArcheAge. ArcheAge S had originally been positioned as an XL Games-developed project with Kakao Games handling global publishing. After this deal, development and related staff shift to Align Studio, while Kakao Games remains tied to publishing through a revised arrangement.

For players, the practical takeaway is limited but notable: ArcheAge S is changing hands alongside the ArcheAge IP, while ArcheAge Chronicles has not been listed as part of that development transfer. What that means for branding, publishing, or long-term operation of Chronicles is still unclear.
