WoW: Forever Podcast Details Layering Changes Ahead Of November Launch
Blizzard’s sixth episode of the WoW: Forever Podcast focused almost entirely on the tech behind the upcoming launch, with developers talking through layering, world refreshes, rulesets, and how the game will try to keep communities together. World of Warcraft: Forever launches globally on November 4 at 3:00 p.m. PST.
The biggest player-facing change is how world refreshes work. During beta, joining or even being invited to a group could move players between layers quickly, sometimes at awkward or dangerous moments. Blizzard says that invite behavior was a bug, and at launch, joining a group or guild will instead show a prompt with a time window so players can move when they’re ready.
- Zone-edge pop-in, like players appearing and vanishing near Orgrimmar’s gate, was tied to the new server setup. Blizzard says late beta fixes mostly cleaned it up, though zone edges and world refreshes can still happen.
- Zones, or small groups of zones, share layers, and Blizzard can change those groupings over time. Durotar may need different handling at launch than Orgrimmar does a month later.
- Population caps are adjustable. The team said Westfall and the Barrens were too crowded early in beta, so caps were lowered as testing continued.
- The game will try to place players near people they’ve grouped with, guildmates, nearby guilds, and players using the same client language. Ignoring someone won’t remove them from your world.
- PvE and PvP players won’t group together at launch, mainly because of economy and farming concerns. Roleplay rulesets could get shared auction house or dungeon options later if populations shrink, but nothing is planned right now.
Oceanic day and night timing also came up. Blizzard said it has hardware in Australia and could set those worlds to Australian time, but grouping with an American-led party could cause a sudden day-to-night shift. The team is asking Australia and New Zealand players whether that tradeoff would be worth it.
Blizzard also touched on ideas that aren’t locked in, including larger “army” groups for world PvP, timed events for Mak’gora Arena, world bosses, and proximity voice chat. For launch, though, players should expect the server behavior seen at the end of beta.
There won’t be a podcast during launch week. Blizzard said the show should return about two weeks later with a lore-focused episode.
