Windrose gets off to a big Steam start, but server issues are already showing

Windrose, the new PvE pirate survival sandbox from Windrose Crew, launched into early access this week and has had a strong opening on Steam. The game peaked at 69,544 concurrent players, according to SteamDB, and also climbed into Steam’s top sellers.

Early player response looks solid so far. Windrose currently sits at a “very positive” user review rating on Steam, with players pointing to its visuals, exploration, naval combat, and overall challenge. Some reviews also mention balance problems, especially with enemy difficulty early on.

The big catch is stability. The developers said on Discord that most of the incoming bug reports are tied to multiplayer and connection problems, particularly P2P co-op and dedicated servers. In short, the game brought in a lot of players fast, and the online side is feeling it.

Right now, Windrose is only available on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Console versions don’t sound close. In comments shared with GameSpot, the team said it’s still interested in bringing the game to consoles, but the focus is on reaching version 1.0 first.

For now, that’s a pretty familiar early access picture: strong launch numbers, good first impressions, and a pile of server and co-op issues to sort out while the audience is still growing.
