Valve prices Steam Machine from $1,049 and opens lottery reservations

Valve has set pricing for the Steam Machine, its SteamOS-powered living-room PC, and it won’t be widely available at launch. The system starts at $1,049 USD / £879 GBP for the 512GB model, while the 2TB version costs $1,349 USD / £1,149 GBP.

Reservations are being handled through a lottery system rather than a normal checkout rush. Players can register through the Valve website until June 25 at 10am Pacific, after which Valve will randomly assign places in a reservation queue. The first purchase emails are expected to go out Monday, June 29, with Valve aiming to work through the queue by the end of the year.

The Steam Machine is also available in bundles with a Steam Controller. Those come in at $1,128 / £938 for the 512GB model and $1,428 / £1,208 for the 2TB model. Regional pricing also includes €1,039 for the base 512GB unit and €1,359 for the 2TB unit.

Valve says its original target price is “no longer viable” because of hardware costs and supply issues, noting that some components couldn’t be sourced “at any price.” That lines up with the broader squeeze on RAM and storage pricing, which has been pushed up in part by heavy demand from AI companies.

Early reviews seem positive on the hardware itself, especially its size and living-room setup, but less so on the price. Rock Paper Shotgun’s Steam Machine review calls it a capable TV-friendly PC, while also noting that it isn’t trying to match a higher-end desktop gaming rig. Other reviewers have made a similar point: it may be one of the easier ways into PC gaming, but it’s priced well above current PlayStation and Xbox consoles.
