Stars Reach, the Sandbox MMO From Raph Koster’s Playable Worlds, Hits Steam Early Access This Summer
Playable Worlds says Stars Reach will launch into Steam Early Access on PC this summer. The sci-fi sandbox MMORPG is led by Raph Koster, best known for his work on Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies, and is built around player-driven exploration, crafting, settlement building, trade, combat, and long-term changes to the game world.
There’s no specific Early Access date yet. The studio has confirmed three paid entry tiers: the Firstlight Pack for $29.99, the Voyager Pack for $49.99, and the Cosmonaut Pack for $79.99. Each tier includes different rewards and cosmetics.
At Early Access launch, Stars Reach will include multiple planets to explore, resource gathering and harvesting, crafting, player trading, and combat on land and in space. The game uses a classless progression system, so players won’t be locked into a single role. You can lean into building, fighting, trading, exploring, or mix things up as you go.
The bigger pitch is the simulation layer. Playable Worlds says planets can change based on what players do, from forests growing or burning to rivers being redirected and creatures moving through the environment. Settlements, roads, farms, and homes are meant to leave a lasting mark rather than reset between sessions.
Some major systems are coming later during development. Playable Worlds says future updates will add a planet-eating hive mind that players can fight together, along with factions, political structures, and PvP combat.
Stars Reach is aiming for the old-school sandbox MMO crowd, but with a more modern tech setup behind it. The studio describes the game as a persistent single-server universe that evolves over time, though we’ll have to see how much of that promise is in place when Early Access opens this summer.
