Stars Reach hands-on demo shows off its simulated sandbox MMO ambitions
Stars Reach, the sandbox MMO from Playable Worlds, was shown in a guided hands-on demo during Summer Game Fest 2026, with studio lead Raph Koster walking through some of the systems behind its persistent universe. The game has already been playable for backers, and Early Access is still planned for this summer, though no specific date was given in the source.
The big takeaway from the demo is that Stars Reach is leaning hard into simulation. Playable Worlds is building the MMO around a universe where objects can shift between states of matter, weather can form from evaporated water, and terrain changes can have knock-on effects. In one demo example, rock was melted into lava, while Koster explained that the game tracks the temperature of every cubic meter in its world.
That same logic extends to the environment. Draining a lake or reshaping nearby terrain can change the surrounding ground, potentially affecting player-built structures. Ecosystems are also meant to react to player behavior. Overhunting a species, for example, could push it toward extinction, and the source notes that some current backers are already organizing around conservation-style play.
Stars Reach also isn’t being built around a traditional MMO leveling model. Koster said the game doesn’t have levels, though players can still progress heavily through its systems. The idea is to avoid the usual problem of being out-leveled and instead push players toward different roles, skills, and social structures inside the sandbox.
Koster framed the project as a response to MMO design that he feels has stayed too close to old class, quest, and combat templates. Stars Reach is aiming for a broader setup, with room for exploration, crafting, governance, trade, environmental management, and other player-driven activities alongside combat.
As with most ambitious sandbox MMOs, the open question is how much of that promise holds up once more players are in the world at the same time. For now, Stars Reach is still targeting Early Access this summer, and Playable Worlds is positioning it as a systems-first MMO rather than another guided quest treadmill.
