Epic Unveils Unreal Engine 6, Releases Unreal Engine 5.8 Now

Epic used its State of Unreal keynote at Unreal Fest Chicago to announce Unreal Engine 6 and release Unreal Engine 5.8. UE6 doesn’t have a full launch date yet, but Epic says it’s targeting early access by the end of 2027.

The pitch for UE6 is built around lessons from Fortnite and Unreal Editor for Fortnite. Epic says the next engine is meant to let developers build once and deploy across traditional platforms, Fortnite, and their own live game ecosystems. The main pieces are a bigger role for Verse as the gameplay programming model, more portable content and code across games and engines, and new pipeline tools including Model Context Protocol integrations for models like Claude and Gemini.

Unreal Engine 5.8 is available now, and Epic is calling it the last planned major UE5 release, while leaving room for a possible 5.9 if needed. Several features have moved to Production Ready status, including MegaLights, Audio Insights, Dataflow for Chaos Cloth, Live Link Hub, Iris, and Movie Render Graph.

UE 5.8 also adds Mesh Terrain as an experimental tool for building more complex 3D landscapes, plus shader compilation improvements. Epic says those changes helped cut Fortnite’s shader count by 68%. Lumen has also been updated with lightweight dynamic global illumination aimed at supporting 60 fps on Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

There’s a new experimental MCP plugin in UE 5.8 too, letting developers connect models such as Claude directly to Unreal Engine projects. Epic is positioning this less as a chat assistant and more as a way for models to interact with specific Unreal workflows, though how useful that is will depend on the project and team.

Epic also launched Lore, a free open source version control system built for projects that mix code with large binary assets, which is common in games and film work.

On the Fortnite side, Epic says it has now paid out more than $1 billion to developers since UEFN launched. The company also said The Simpsons is coming to the UEFN IP program soon, giving creators access to official Springfield characters and locations. The Epic Games Store is getting a rebuilt launcher and storefront backend as well, with more than 30 Fortnite cosmetic collaborations tied to store purchases planned for 2026 and continuing into 2027.
