Riot confirms League of Legends Classic, with full reveal set for July
Riot Games has confirmed League of Legends Classic, a throwback version of its long-running MOBA, after dataminers surfaced references to the project and possible playable champions.
The reveal doesn’t lock down exactly what “Classic” means yet. Riot’s teaser leans into that uncertainty, joking around with ideas like a specific old season, an early build, beta-era League, or older champion kits. Executive producer Paul “Pabro” Bellezza suggests Riot may be thinking about Classic as something more flexible than one frozen version of the game.
That would make it a little different from the usual nostalgia-server approach. World of Warcraft Classic, for example, brought back specific eras of Blizzard’s MMO, while Overwatch has used limited-time Classic modes built around older hero rosters and balance states.
For now, players are still guessing which part of League’s history Riot is targeting. Dataminers have reportedly found PBE artwork and skins that point in a few directions, but nothing conclusive.
Riot says more details are coming during the MSI Finals on July 11 at 11pm PDT. The Mid-Season Invitational is taking place in Daejeon, South Korea, so that’s the next time to watch for firm info on how League of Legends Classic will actually work.
