Rec Room is shutting down on June 1 after 10 years
Rec Room is shutting down on June 1, ending a 10-year run for the social multiplayer game and creation platform. In a farewell message, the studio said the project never became sustainably profitable, even after trying paid user-generated content, AI building tools, and layoffs last summer.
According to the official post, the team chose to announce the closure now so it could wind the service down more cleanly and give players and creators time to save what they can. That includes tools for creators to download room data in formats the studio says may help them rebuild those spaces elsewhere, including standalone projects made with Unity. Players can also download their account data and photos before the servers go offline.
Rec Room launched in 2016 and built an audience around user-made rooms, social spaces, and cross-platform play. Over the years it expanded well beyond its early VR roots, but that broader reach apparently still wasn’t enough to make the business work long term. The game aimed to compete with VRChat, but hasn’t been able to. The game was once valued at over $4 billion just a few years ago.
The shutdown notice also includes a farewell video and more details on the wind-down process. If you’ve still got rooms, screenshots, or other account data you want to keep, the main thing now is the deadline: June 1.
