Old School RuneScape Hardcore Worlds Launches as Jagex Tackles Early Gold Smuggling Exploit

Old School RuneScape’s Hardcore Worlds went live today, November 4, but the launch came with an early economy issue. The OSRS team says it found one character with far more wealth than should have been possible within about an hour of the new worlds opening, then traced it to a pre-launch exploit involving Tutorial Island.

According to the update, one player managed to leave Tutorial Island while being treated as a Hardcore Worlds character before the mode had actually launched. That let them play on normal worlds, build up skills and wealth, then carry that progress into Hardcore Worlds when they opened. The character and related alts were banned roughly 1.5 hours after launch.

  • 115,563,777 GP in wealth entered through the exploit.
  • 103,175,293 GP was removed before reaching the wider economy.
  • 12,388,484 GP is suspected to have made it into circulation.
  • Jagex says it has added extra safety measures and is still tracking remaining wealth and items.

The team also says it has not found evidence of other abuse routes, including the speculated Clan Coffers and PvP Arena cases. For now, Jagex is treating this as a single incident and says the numbers may change as the investigation continues.

As for the mode itself, Hardcore Worlds are permanent and don’t include XP boosts or drop rate modifiers. Players need a fresh character that has not finished Tutorial Island, then opt in through Death’s Delegate before being sent to Death’s Office and onto a Hardcore World.

This isn’t Ironman Hardcore. Trading is allowed, and the Grand Exchange works, but Hardcore Worlds have their own separate economy. Items from the main game can’t be brought in or sold there.

Deaths are stricter than some players may expect. Several activities that are usually considered safe, including Fight Caves, Inferno, Barbarian Assault and Pest Control, are not safe here. Castle Wars, Clan Wars, Soul Wars, TzHaar Fight Pit and a few specific resurrection rewards remain exceptions. Last Man Standing and Bounty Hunter aren’t available on Hardcore Worlds.

When a Hardcore character dies, players can either reset that character back to a fresh post-Tutorial Island state or transfer it to the main game permanently. Anything that would normally go to a Gravestone is gone for good.
