Old School RuneScape Adds Adoptable Dogs and a Crab-Talking Quest

Old School RuneScape’s September 8 update adds two new quests: A Ruff Situation and Crab Quest. The bigger one for most players is A Ruff Situation, a novice, members-only quest that opens a new Dog Shelter near Ice Mountain and lets players adopt puppies afterward.

A Ruff Situation only requires 15 Crafting to start. After helping Talia and Chase get the shelter running, players can adopt a puppy and find more breeds around Gielinor. Dogs grow over time if cared for, though unlike kittens, they won’t run away if you stop feeding them. Fully grown dogs can also dig for Treasure Trail steps, so clue hunters won’t need to carry a spade for those digs.

  • A Ruff Situation adds 12 dog breeds, including corgis, huskies, labradors, pugs, shibas, and yorkies.
  • Players can keep up to 12 dogs in a Player-Owned House Menagerie.
  • Dogs can still run away if the player is killed by another player in the Wilderness while the dog is out.
  • Crab Quest starts on Dognose Island and requires 40 Sailing and 30 Fishing.
  • Crab Quest involves drinking from a mysterious bottle and, yes, talking to crabs.

The update also includes a few fixes. Boss sounds should no longer keep playing when area sounds are muted, an issue with Nightmare of Ashihama pillars has been fixed, and mirrorback araxytes should no longer duplicate recoil damage when Araxxor is attacked. Players owed an extra refund after buying more than one fish sack before its recent price cut can now collect it from Alry the Angler.

Jagex also says it’s still investigating recent connection problems affecting some worlds and world hopping, along with reported issues tied to Menu Entry Swapper 2.0. A client update is expected soon for higher-priority MES 2.0 problems.

There’s a charity stream tied to the dog update on September 11, 2026 at 15:00 UTC. The Old School team plans to play through A Ruff Situation and Crab Quest, hold a community dog walk on World 317, and donate 10,000 GBP to Alveus Sanctuary. Players can donate through the official donation page.
