Jagex Plans Multi-Year RuneScape: Dragonwilds Story After 1.0

Jagex says RuneScape: Dragonwilds isn’t being treated as a one-and-done survival spin-off. The co-op open-world game is still heading for its 1.0 launch on September 15, with releases planned for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, but the studio is already talking about what comes after.

In a note to the community, Mod Dutch said the 1.0 update will close out the Kuldra Saga, sending players into the Scorned Wilderness raid to face the Dragon Queen herself. That wraps her story, but not the wider story of Ashenfall, the hidden region of Gielinor where Dragonwilds takes place.

Jagex described the next phase as a “multi-year journey,” with Ashenfall’s isolation and ancient magic becoming the focus for future story development. The studio didn’t lay out a roadmap in this post, so there’s no clear list yet of future zones, systems, or update dates. More details are expected closer to launch, with another larger showing planned for RuneFest in October.

Dragonwilds has been in Early Access, mixing RuneScape flavor with survival crafting, co-op exploration, base building, and combat. Its last major pre-1.0 content update, Umbral Sands, arrived in June. Since then, Jagex has been focusing on the full launch, smaller updates, and general polish rather than another big content drop before September.

For players already in, the main takeaway is simple: 1.0 is meant to finish the first major arc, not mark the end of development. The bigger question now is how quickly Jagex can turn that long-term plan into regular post-launch updates.
