Camelot Unchained’s Steam Early Access Build Gets Rough First Impressions
Camelot Unchained is now being sold through Steam Early Access, but early hands-on impressions point to a build that still feels far from ready. The current version reportedly has little onboarding, sparse enemy placement, frequent bugs, and servers that aren’t running continuously.
The MMORPG has been in development for years and was originally pitched around large-scale Realm versus Realm combat. According to the impressions, though, the Steam build doesn’t yet offer enough of a player base or content loop to show that side of the game in a meaningful way.
Reported issues include spells failing to activate, movement abilities behaving unpredictably, disconnects, outdated UI, no meaningful character appearance customization within races, and very limited guidance for new players. The world is described as oversized and empty, with few mobs and no quest structure to help players understand progression.
Mark Jacobs has acknowledged several complaints publicly, including low mob density, limited guidance, performance problems, slow gathering and crafting, and enemies dying too quickly. He has also argued that much of the project’s long development time went into engine work and large-scale battle tech rather than a traditional finished MMO build.
That defense may not land for players expecting Early Access to mean a playable foundation rather than a rough technical test. Steam buyers do at least have the usual refund option, with Steam’s refund policy generally allowing refunds within two hours of playtime and 14 days of purchase.
For now, the takeaway is simple: Camelot Unchained’s Steam Early Access launch appears to be in a very unfinished state, especially compared with established RvR and large-scale PvP options already available elsewhere. Looks like another crowdfunded MMO flop.
