ArenaNet Details the Vaelwardens, Guild Wars 3’s Player Order in Ancient Orr
ArenaNet has shared a new lore entry for Guild Wars 3, focusing on the Vaelwardens, the guild players will represent in the upcoming MMO. The game is set 1,000 years before the original Guild Wars, during Orr’s Golden Age, when Tyria looks very different and mortal races haven’t yet been granted magic.
In the official post, narrative lead Aaron Linde describes the Vaelwardens as the first guild chartered in Orr. Their role is to protect the Vael, magical spirits tied to Orr’s unusually rich magical ecosystem. They do that through artificing and Signets, gems that contain fixed expressions of magic.
By the time Guild Wars 3 begins, the Vaelwardens aren’t exactly thriving. The order is fading, and much of the world sees its members as holdouts clinging to an old duty. Others, including a group called the Mavenwrights, view them as an obstacle to progress and prosperity.
That sets up the player’s place in the story: one of the last members of an order trying to preserve the Vael while Orr changes around them. ArenaNet says players will use Signets, build relationships with spirits, and push back against forces trying to exploit Orr’s magic.
The post is mainly a lore drop, not a release update, so there’s still no new date, platform list, or pricing info here. But it does give a clearer look at the era ArenaNet is building for Guild Wars 3, and at least one major faction players will be tied to from the start.
