Tartaros Online
Tartaros Online (sometimes promoted as Tartaros Rebirth) is a fantasy MMORPG with a strong anime aesthetic and a structure that feels closer to a party based action RPG than a traditional open world MMO. Instead of committing to one avatar, you build a small squad and actively swap between characters in combat while AI handles the rest. Progression is tied heavily to a scenario focused single player mode that introduces the cast, then branches into repeatable instanced missions and PvP.

Tartaros Online Overview
Tartaros Online blends a story led RPG campaign with MMO style social hubs and repeatable instanced content. Rather than playing a single class, you assemble a team of three characters from a roster of nine, with additional members unlocked as you move through the scenario mode. In missions you can take direct control of one hero, then swap on the fly while the other two are controlled by AI, which gives combat a distinct rhythm compared to more standard hotbar MMORPGs.
The core online loop revolves around instanced stages that you can clear solo or with other players. These missions are presented in different categories (including Cooperative, Special, and Limited Mission), giving the game a dungeon runner cadence where you regroup in town between runs to trade, chat, and organize parties or guilds. Another notable element is that stages can vary through randomized layouts, which helps reduce the feeling of running the exact same map repeatedly, even if objectives and enemy sets still follow familiar patterns.
While it is a Korean MMORPG with roots going back years, Tartaros Online stands out mainly for its multi character control system, a feature seen in very few games in the genre, with Granado Espada being a common comparison point.

Tartaros Online Review
Tartaros Online never had the chance to establish itself for long in its 2017 global run, but its design is still interesting to evaluate because it sits between genres. Moment to moment, it plays less like an open world MMO and more like a mission based action RPG where your real “build” is the composition of your three character party and how smoothly you rotate between them.
The scenario mode is the clearest strength conceptually. It gives the game a defined structure and a reason to care about unlocking the roster, instead of the usual MMORPG approach where story is optional dressing. Because characters are tied to progression, you get a steady sense of expanding options, and the game’s party system feels purposeful rather than gimmicky.
Mission mode is where most players would have spent their time. The instanced stages make grouping easy and keep sessions bite sized, and the randomized maps help the repetition go down a bit easier. Still, the overall presentation shows its age, with interface and visual fidelity reflecting its older origins, and the combat can feel constrained by the AI behavior of your off characters, depending on the encounter and how much micromanagement you prefer.
PvP is another highlight for players who enjoy competitive modes in smaller arenas. The fact that it feeds progression (Training Points and Weapon Exp) gives it a stronger incentive loop than many MMORPG side PvP modes, although it also means players who do not enjoy PvP may feel like they are missing an efficient path to advancement.
Overall, Tartaros Online is best remembered for its multi character party control and scenario driven structure, two ideas that are still uncommon in the MMO space. If you are interested in MMORPG history and unusual hybrid systems, it is an easy title to be curious about, even if its short global lifespan limits it mostly to retrospective discussion.

Development History / Background:
Developed by South Korean studio Intivsoft, Tartaros Online first appeared in 2009 and later resurfaced for a global English release under the Tartaros Rebirth name. The setting is Tarataros, a realm connected to the Gods, and the narrative follows a group of nine heroes pursuing a mystical substance known as Obolus. Unlike many MMORPGs that treat story as optional, Tartaros puts a substantial amount of its content into a single player scenario mode, using it both to deliver character focused storytelling and to unlock additional playable members for your party.
After progressing through the scenario, those characters become part of your toolkit for the repeatable mission content and PvP modes, which is where the MMO style grind and social play loop takes over. Tartaros launched globally in English on October 29th, 2017 (GamenGame), and was shut down in December, 2017.
