H1Z1 Overview
H1Z1 sits at the crossroads of open-world survival and competitive PvP. You spawn with very little, then immediately start making decisions that matter, whether that means combing through abandoned areas for parts, improvising early weapons, or choosing a route that avoids other players entirely. The game’s rural setting and persistent servers give it a lived-in feel, and the constant risk of losing what you carry makes even short supply runs feel tense.
Crafting and construction are at the heart of the experience. Early on, basic scavenged materials can be turned into practical tools, while longer-term survival pushes you toward building a secured base where you can store loot and regroup. Zombies provide steady pressure and can complicate fights, but human opponents are usually the biggest wildcard. In practice, some players will scavenge patiently, while others will take shortcuts by hunting other survivors for their supplies.
For those who prefer a less hostile atmosphere, H1Z1 also supports PvE-oriented servers, letting you focus more on exploration, crafting, and managing the undead threat without constant player ambushes. Even there, cooperation pays off, because traveling and building as a group is safer and more efficient, and dying still comes with meaningful loss.
Alongside the survival sandbox, H1Z1 also became known for PvP-focused modes, including a widely played Battle Royale variant where everyone starts on even footing and fights until only one remains.

H1Z1 Additional Information
Developer: Daybreak Game Company
Other Platforms: PlayStation 4
Game Engine: Forgelight
Open Beta Date: January 15, 2015 (Early Access)
Development History / Background:
H1Z1 was created by Daybreak Game Company, the studio previously known as Sony Online Entertainment, and it runs on the team’s proprietary Forgelight engine. It arrived during the early wave of modern survival games and took clear inspiration from the genre momentum sparked by titles like DayZ. The name itself comes from an online rumor suggesting the H1N1 flu could mutate into a fictional H1Z1 strain capable of reanimating the dead.
The project was formally revealed on April 9, 2014, following public teasing from John Smedley, then president of Daybreak Games. While H1Z1 is positioned as free-to-play, access prior to full release was offered through a paid Early Access option priced at $19.99. That Early Access period began on January 15, 2015.
