Overview

Project Powder Overview

Project Powder carved out a niche as a free to play racing MMO focused on snowboarding, with matches capped at eight players charging down steep courses. While finishing position mattered, the game also pushed players to ride with flair, successful tricks such as flips and spins could translate into extra momentum, rewarding anyone willing to take risks instead of simply hugging the safest line.

Progression was tied to racing, as completing events granted experience points that fed into unlocking new trick options. Rather than handing those moves out instantly, the game asked players to pass license tests before specific tricks became available, a small but memorable barrier that made new abilities feel earned. It was a simple structure, but it helped give long-term players a reason to keep queueing beyond pure competition.

Despite its distinctive premise, the game struggled for years with limited support. The player population remained low, and meaningful updates, even basic maintenance like bug fixing, became increasingly rare. Project Powder ultimately closed when Outspark shut down, although the title had already felt largely overlooked for a long stretch leading up to that final date.

Game Modes:

Race Mode – A classic downhill race where the first rider to the finish takes it.

Battle Mode – An item-based mode that leans more arcade than simulation, with less emphasis on pure line choice and execution.

Coin Mode – A points-focused run where riders collect coins worth different values while navigating the course.

Development History / Background:

Project Powder was developed by the South Korea based Studio BlueCat, which later went bankrupt. Even after that, the game continued operating for years through regional publishers, NHN handled service in Korea while Outspark published in North America. When Outspark closed its doors, the North American service ended as well. The title also operated in Europe under a different publisher and name, SnowBound Online, and that version reportedly benefited from a more hands-on team, including several developers who had previously worked at Studio BlueCat.

In terms of setting, the game offered a light sci-fi backdrop rather than a deep narrative. It frames snowboarding culture in the year 2146 AD after severe global warming melts Earth’s polar ice caps, pushing enthusiasts to build a Warp Gate and search the galaxy for new worlds with untouched snow. It is a thin premise, but it fits the game’s tone and gives its slopes an excuse to feel a bit more fantastical than ordinary resort runs.
