Square Enix profit jumps as HD games and MMOs lift first quarter
Square Enix had a much stronger first quarter, with profit rising about 176% year over year to ¥13.2 billion, or roughly $82.9 million. Net sales climbed 32.3% to ¥78.4 billion, while operating income rose 88.6% to ¥17 billion.
The main driver was the company’s Digital Entertainment business, which covers HD games, MMOs, and mobile/browser games. That segment brought in ¥49.9 billion in net sales, up 51.8%, with operating income up 91.8% to ¥15.5 billion.
- HD games net sales nearly doubled to ¥17.7 billion, with operating income up sharply to ¥6.1 billion.
- Square Enix credited the launch of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and the Microsoft Store, along with catalog sales.
- MMO net sales rose 32.2% to ¥12.7 billion, while operating income stayed roughly flat at ¥3.6 billion.
- Smart device and PC browser games also improved, with net sales up 35.6% to ¥19.4 billion.
On the MMO side, Square Enix pointed to better user activity after announcing a Final Fantasy 14 expansion planned for early 2027. The company said profit only increased slightly in that area because of expenses tied to the planned release.

Total game unit sales hit 7.38 million for the quarter, up from 4.01 million a year earlier. Downloads made up most of that number at 6.65 million units, compared with 0.73 million physical copies.
Square Enix also said it’s keeping its full-year consolidated forecast unchanged from the outlook it announced on May 14, 2026.
