Sony is reportedly refunding Highguard purchases on PS5 after the shooter’s shutdown
Sony has reportedly started issuing refunds for Highguard purchases to PlayStation 5 players following the game’s shutdown. The reports point to automatic refunds for microtransactions, meaning at least some players are getting their money back without having to file a request first.
The refund reports surfaced in a now-deleted Reddit thread and were picked up by IGN’s report. One player said they received notice that payments made during the few weeks Highguard was live would be refunded, even though they hadn’t asked for one.
So far, it looks like this is limited to PS5. Highguard was also available on Steam and Xbox Series X|S, but the source material doesn’t mention similar refunds on those platforms.
Highguard, a free-to-play hero shooter from Wildlight, had a very short run. It was revealed at The Game Awards in December, launched on January 26, and was permanently shut down earlier this month. The game had little marketing before release, with the studio reportedly aiming for a surprise-launch approach similar to Apex Legends.
The shutdown came after a rough stretch for developer Wildlight. Reports in recent weeks said the studio had been hit by layoffs, and that its funding was tied to performance targets the game didn’t meet. Highguard itself is now offline, so for affected PS5 players, these refunds may be the final loose end being cleared up.
