RuneScape shows off lighting and shadow fixes in new Road to Restoration preview

Jagex has shared another look at RuneScape’s Road to Restoration work, this time focused on graphical rendering. The new preview shows a batch of visual fixes aimed at lighting, shadows, and outline effects that have been making characters and gear look overly shiny or oddly artificial.

According to the official post, the changes are meant to clean up inconsistent shadows, tone down harsh lighting, and remove some of the outline effects that can make models look plastic-like. The before-and-after shots are the main draw here, and they give a pretty clear idea of what Jagex is trying to fix.

It’s not a feature update in the usual sense, and there isn’t a release date attached in the preview. This is more of a progress report on one part of the broader Road to Restoration effort, which Jagex has been using to address long-running issues across the game.

For players, the practical takeaway is simple: character models and equipment should look more natural once these changes land, with fewer strange shadow artifacts and less aggressive scene lighting. If you’ve noticed RuneScape characters sometimes looking oddly glossy or cut out from their surroundings, this is the pass meant to deal with that.
