Path of Exile’s Covens of Umbra Expansion Launches November 13 With Fate League and Atlas Changes

Path of Exile’s next expansion, Covens of Umbra, launches November 13 PST as a free update across all available platforms. The update adds the Fate challenge league, replaces Scarabs with a new system called Threads of Creation, refreshes the Atlas passive tree, and makes a broad pass at endgame league mechanics.

The new league centers on covenites trying to summon the Coven Queen. After defeating them, players can pick a Fate for the area boss, raising the difficulty while also improving the rewards. Bosses empowered this way can drop Viscera, which can be placed on a Wickerman to gain bits of power from defeated enemies.

There’s also a higher-end version called Grim Fates, aimed at Atlas bosses. These can reward Pinnacle Boss Viscera, and Grinding Gear Games is teasing a direct confrontation with the Coven Queen as part of the endgame chase.

  • Scarabs are being removed and replaced by Threads of Creation, which are set in the Map device to apply league mechanics and scale monster rarity and difficulty.
  • The Atlas passive tree has been rebuilt with a new layout, new wheels, and effects that previously came from Scarabs.
  • Several older league mechanics are being adjusted, including Beyond, Harvest’s Sacred Grove, Gwennen, Mirages, and the Temple of Atzoatl.
  • Loot drops are getting what GGG describes as a fundamental rework, alongside the usual batch of new Unique items.

The expansion was also included in GGG’s ExileCon 2026 roundup, with more details available in the official post. For now, the big takeaway is that Covens of Umbra isn’t just a new league wrapper. It’s also changing how players juice maps and interact with the Atlas endgame.
