Overwatch 2’s 10th anniversary event is drawing a rough response from players
Overwatch’s 10th anniversary should’ve been an easy win for Blizzard, but the celebration has landed badly with a chunk of the playerbase. Fans had been expecting something bigger from a milestone this large, and the reaction around the event has been noticeably sour.
The main issue seems to be the gap between expectations and what actually showed up in-game. Instead of a major content drop or a more substantial throwback event, players got a smaller anniversary package that many feel doesn’t match the occasion. That’s led to a wave of complaints from longtime fans who were hoping for more than a fairly routine live-service event.
That frustration isn’t hard to understand. Overwatch has been around for a decade, first as the original 2016 release and now as Overwatch 2, and anniversary events have usually been a chance to revisit old cosmetics, old modes, and the game’s broader history. For a 10-year mark, players clearly expected Blizzard to go further.
What Blizzard does next will probably matter more than the event itself. A weak seasonal event can pass quickly, but an anniversary is the kind of moment players remember, especially in a game that’s spent the last few years dealing with uneven updates and community skepticism. Right now, the mood around the celebration looks less nostalgic than frustrated.
