Old School RuneScape Worlds Back Online After Death Bug Deletes Player Gear

Jagex temporarily took Old School RuneScape offline on October 7 after a bug caused some players to lose gear through the game’s death and item retrieval systems. The issue appeared after the weekly update, which added Pete Kayer’s Challenges, a new PvP training activity at Ferox Enclave.

The bug hit players who died in certain boss arenas, respawned, then died again before collecting their stored items. In OSRS, some PvM deaths send gear to a retrieval service instead of dropping it normally. If a player then takes another unsafe death before reclaiming those items, that gear can be deleted. In this case, the respawn problem effectively set some players up for two unsafe deaths in a row.

Jagex first warned players to avoid PvM while it investigated, then brought the worlds down to fix the issue. The game is now back online, and the studio says the death and respawn problem has been resolved.

The team is not rolling back the game. Instead, Jagex says it believes it has identified every player who may have lost items and is handling manual restores through the rest of the day, likely continuing into tomorrow. The studio also apologized for the disruption.

The incident has stirred up more discussion around OSRS’s high-end PvM death mechanics, especially item retrieval rules that can wipe expensive setups after a follow-up unsafe death. A Jagex developer said on Reddit that the studio does intend to address the system, with work being explored as a possible next focus for the quality-of-life team after the remaining Gathering Efficiencies changes are finished.

As for the update itself, Pete Kayer’s Challenges are meant to teach PvP basics like protection prayers, freezes, special attacks, gear switching, and combo eating. The update also added stackable Net Traps for Hunter and a trap reset option. Jagex has already hotfixed Pete Kayer’s final form, cutting its health by 150.
