Old School RuneScape Hardcore Worlds Arrive November 4

Old School RuneScape is getting permanent Hardcore Worlds on November 4, giving players a fresh-start ruleset where death has real consequences and progress happens at the same pace as the main game. No XP boosts, no drop-rate bumps, no temporary league-style modifiers.

To join, players will make a fresh character on Tutorial Island and speak with Death’s Delegate near the Magic Instructor and Ironman Tutor. From there, they’ll be sent to Death’s Office to accept the challenge before starting in Lumbridge.

  • Hardcore Worlds use the harsher Hardcore Group Ironman death rules, meaning most deaths send you back to Death’s Office.
  • On death, players choose between resetting the character completely or transferring it to the main game.
  • Resetting wipes quests, stats, items, and protected items, essentially starting over from Tutorial Island.
  • Transferring removes the character from Hardcore Worlds permanently, but keeps protected items, bank items, and other stored items.
  • Items that would normally go to a gravestone are deleted instead.
  • Bounty Hunter and Last Man Standing will be disabled at launch, though Jagex says they could be enabled later.

Some activities that are normally safe for Hardcore Ironman won’t be safe here, including Chambers of Xeric, Inferno, Nightmare Zone, Pest Control, TzHaar Fight Cave, Barbarian Assault, and deaths inside a player-owned house. A few exceptions remain safe, such as Castle Wars, Clan Wars, Soul Wars, TzHaar Fight Pit, and specific diary resurrection rewards for Fight Caves and Zulrah.

The economy is also part of the experiment. These worlds are permanent and allow normal trading systems, but deaths can remove gold and items from circulation. That could make prices behave very differently from the main game, especially early on when supplies are thin and every risky trip matters.

Jagex is also changing Escape Crystals alongside the launch. Every Hardcore Worlds character starts with one, the price is being cut from 75,000 coins to 10,000, Death will sell them from his office, and activating one will clear status effects like poison or burn.

Major deaths and world-first achievements will be broadcast across Hardcore Worlds. Death’s Office is also becoming un-instanced on all worlds, turning it into a shared hub for players starting, resetting, or deciding whether to transfer out.

A separate World Switcher update is planned for later in November, with filters for world types, regions, members and free-to-play worlds, plus mobile support and a compact view option on desktop.
