Monsters & Memories outlines its class design goals ahead of October early access

Monsters & Memories developer Niche Worlds Cult has shared a high-level look at how it wants classes to feel when the old-school MMO heads into early access this October. In an official post, the studio said each class is being built around a few core goals: it should be fun to play on its own, useful in a group, and clearly different from other classes even when they overlap in theme.

That last point seems to be a big focus. The team said it wants classes to feel familiar to MMO players without blurring together, and it wants leveling to include meaningful milestones instead of long stretches where not much changes.

The post comes as Niche Worlds Cult reviews its full class lineup ahead of launch. According to the studio, that means looking at class strengths and weaknesses, how much different kits overlap, and whether role identity stays clear in group play. It also said related systems are being adjusted where needed, since those can have a big effect on how a class actually feels moment to moment.

There aren’t many concrete class changes in this update, so this is more of a design check-in than a feature reveal. Still, for a game leaning hard into classic MMO structure and group-focused play, class identity is a pretty central piece of the pitch.

Monsters & Memories is a throwback sandbox MMORPG, and its early access release was recently moved to October. If you’re planning to jump in then, this is the clearest look yet at what the team wants from its class design, even if the specifics will have to wait.
