Jagex Reconsiders RuneScape Reignited After Veteran Player Backlash
Jagex says it is re-evaluating RuneScape Reignited after strong pushback from veteran players who felt the plan would sideline their existing characters. The studio apologized directly, saying it made current players feel like they were “no longer our focus” and that the problem was “entirely on us.”
Reignited was pitched around giving new and returning players a fresh economy and progression path, tied to Jagex’s broader Restoration plans for RuneScape. Jagex says interest in the idea was higher than expected, but acknowledged that the rollout raised serious concerns about splitting the community and making long-term accounts feel less relevant.
The main issues called out by players include the fear that veteran worlds could lose population, that the playerbase could become too fragmented, and that older characters might be treated as “tainted” by past eras of RuneScape. Players also pushed back on restrictions between Veteran and Reignited characters, locked cosmetics and untradeables, and the possibility of needing a separate Membership for a new character.
Jagex says it is now looking at “a heavy set of revisions” rather than moving ahead as originally presented. The studio specifically mentioned finding better ways for Veteran progress to remain intact and meaningful, reducing the hard split between existing and new players, and reviewing the concerns around separate Membership.
No final decision has been made. Jagex says “every option” for Reignited is still on the table, and it plans to show revised proposals to players by the end of this week before deciding what happens next.
