Guild Wars 3 introduces the Mavenwrights, an industrial rival faction in Orr

Guild Wars 3’s latest lore preview focuses on the Mavenwrights, a human-founded guild of builders and industrialists who’ll serve as one of the main hostile factions players run into in Orr. The post, published September 17, lays out their conflict with the Vaelwardens and frames them as a group willing to weaponize Vael magic in the name of progress.

The Mavenwrights were founded a little over 20 years before the start of Guild Wars 3 by Ricken “the Hammer” Oberon, a builder from Callen’s Way. After trade routes shifted and his hometown declined, Oberon turned to the wilds around Tughra Basin, chasing magical resources tied to the Vael. That put him at odds with the Order of the Vael, but it also brought money, influence, and eventually enough support to form an official crafters’ guild.

That status didn’t last. The Mavenwrights eventually lost their guild charter, though the preview keeps the exact reason murky. The Vaelwardens see them as exploiters who pushed too far. The Mavenwrights see themselves as common people and artisans being blocked by an old order that claims too much control over Orr’s resources.

Since then, the conflict has turned uglier. The Mavenwrights have built smuggling networks for signet-bearing weapons, experimented with their own signet artificing, and created devices that rip magic from the Vael. One example mentioned is the flamethrower used by Mavenwright burners, powered by a captured Vael sprite.

The post also gives a sense of what players may face in the field: not just faceless bandits, but workers, traders, and frustrated locals who’ve joined the Mavenwrights for money, ideology, or resentment toward the Vaelwardens. Their weapons still lag behind true Vaelwarden gear, especially when it comes to handling multiple signets, but they make up for it with numbers and a growing stockpile of stolen magical resources.

It’s mostly worldbuilding for now, but it sets up a clear conflict for Orr: guardians trying to protect the Vael against an industrial guild that believes the land’s magic should be taken, sold, and built into something new.
