Final Fantasy XI finally replaces its old PlayOnline website after 24 years

Final Fantasy XI has hit its 24th anniversary, and one of the strangest long-running parts of the game has finally changed with it. Square Enix has replaced the old PlayOnline website, ending a setup that had stuck around for basically the entire life of the MMO.

For longtime FFXI players, that old site was a relic from another era. PlayOnline launched as the game’s original online hub and, even as the MMO kept getting updates and events over the years, the web side of it stayed frozen in time. That’s no longer the case.

The change is mostly about the game’s web presence rather than a major gameplay overhaul, but it still stands out because PlayOnline had become one of the most stubborn leftovers from Final Fantasy XI’s early-2000s launch. If you’ve checked in on the game anytime in the last decade, you probably know exactly how dated it looked. Despite Final Fantasy XI’s age, the game still gets updated from time to time, though no major new expansion has released in a long time.

Final Fantasy XI first launched in 2002 in Japan and remains one of Square Enix’s oldest active online games. Even now, it still gets periodic campaigns, balance changes, and anniversary events, which makes the retirement of the old PlayOnline site feel overdue more than anything else.

There’s no indication here that the game itself is shutting down or making any larger platform shift. This is just a very old piece of FFXI infrastructure finally being dragged into the present.
