Elite: Dangerous servers went down Saturday as hacking rumors spread, but Frontier says it’s resolved
Elite: Dangerous had a rough Saturday as players reported random disconnects and trouble logging back in. The outage sparked a wave of community rumors about a possible hack, but Frontier Developments later said the servers were back online and players began getting in again.
Reports started early Saturday on the official forums, with commanders saying they were getting kicked out mid-session and then failing to load back into the game. Frontier community manager Phil Weeks also posted in Discord during the incident, saying there were “a couple of separate but pretty large issues” happening at once.
While that was going on, speculation took off on social media and community spaces. Some players, citing unconfirmed chatter, claimed a user going by “Big Chungus 40k” had gained access to things like renaming carriers and colonized systems, posting players’ IP addresses in public chat, and draining in-game credits. None of that was backed up with evidence in the reports being shared, and Frontier didn’t publicly confirm a hack.
A message attributed to the same user and shared by a YouTuber also tried to downplay the situation, claiming it was “a little bit of trolling” and denying DDOSing or hacking the game, messing with player items or finances, or deleting accounts.
By Sunday, Frontier posted on X that service had been restored. You can see the company’s confirmation in the announcement, and players on Reddit were also reporting they could log in again.
