Bloomberg reports Bungie is planning layoffs after ending Destiny 2 development

Bungie is reportedly preparing more layoffs after bringing development on Destiny 2 to a close. The report comes from Bloomberg’s report, which says Bungie doesn’t currently have a new project lined up for the Destiny 2 team. The number of jobs at risk hasn’t been confirmed.

Bungie said this week that Destiny 2 development is ending, 12 years after the first Destiny launched. According to Bloomberg, staff have pitched new projects, but none have been approved, and there are no immediate plans to make Destiny 3.

That leaves Bungie in a rough spot. Marathon, the studio’s most recent release, reportedly hasn’t met expectations, and Sony has already taken major impairment charges tied to Bungie’s performance, including Destiny 2. Bungie has also gone through multiple rounds of layoffs in the past few years, with hundreds of jobs cut across 2023 and 2024.

The broader context here isn’t complicated. Sony spent $3.6 billion to acquire Bungie in 2022 as part of its live-service push, but that strategy has cooled off since then. Bungie was supposed to be one of the key studios in that plan, and Destiny 2 had already been showing signs of decline after its big Final Shape bump in 2024. Bungie said in late 2025 that it was having trouble bringing in new players.

Bungie’s own announcement confirmed the end of Destiny 2 development, but not any staffing changes. For now, the layoff plans remain unannounced by the studio itself.
