Wizard Online Overview
Wizard Online was a dark-fantasy MMORPG under development with virtual reality as a primary focus. The concept was simple: enter a medieval realm through headsets such as Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, or Playstation VR and approach fights in a more physical, embodied way than most MMOs. The project was also intended to support non-VR play, enabling participants to join from a normal PC setup without specialized hardware.
Combat leaned into the “battle mage” archetype, with heroes wielding both blade and staff in the style of wizard-warrior action. With motion-control devices, the plan was for players to aim, swing, and cast using real hand movements instead of depending solely on hotbars and canned animations, with peripherals like the Leap Motion Controller mentioned alongside standard VR controllers.
Co-op content was framed around confronting lethal creatures that menaced the world, including named threats like Baphoment and Satan. For those seeking a harsher ruleset, certain servers were envisioned with permanent death, turning losses into lasting consequences and raising the stakes of exploration. Magic was also described as diverse, with utility and control tools planned—Mind Control being one cited example.

Development History / Background:
Wizard Online was an indie project by SongOfDeath, created in Unreal Engine 4 and marketed as a VR-first MMORPG that would still function without a headset. A notable technical aim discussed during development was planned early support for DirectX 12, a fairly ambitious target for a smaller team at the time.
Public-facing plans highlighted broad device support, calling out headsets like Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Playstation VR along with motion and locomotion peripherals. While the game was expected to land sometime in 2016, work eventually ceased; the final official social media update is dated March 23, 2016.
