Starbreak

Starbreak is a free-to-play roguelike MMO action platformer built around quick runs through unpredictable sci-fi stages. You drop into procedurally assembled worlds, clear rooms packed with hostile aliens, and take on dangerous bosses while hunting for better gear. With four distinct Shell classes and a strong emphasis on co-op coordination, the game leans heavily on player skill, positioning, and adapting to whatever the next generated layout throws at you.

Overview

Starbreak Overview

Starbreak is a free-to-play roguelike action platformer with cooperative multiplayer, created by Alexander Carobus (one of the co-founders of Realm of the Mad God) under the Crunchy Games banner. The core loop is straightforward but demanding: enter a hostile, procedurally generated area, survive enemy swarms and traps, defeat bosses, and walk away with loot that can change how your next run plays out.

Instead of traditional MMO classes, Starbreak uses four playable “Shells” with clearly different combat roles and movement rhythms: Wildfire, Duskwing, Ironclad, and Fabricator. Whether you prefer safer ranged pressure, close-range durability, or utility-focused play, the Shell system gives the game a party-like feel when you run with others. Moment-to-moment gameplay is fast and reactive, with platforming and combat tied closely together, so timing, spacing, and smart use of abilities matter as much as your equipment does.

The game also spreads its encounters across more than seven distinct environments, each with its own enemy themes, drops, and hidden surprises. Because layouts are rebuilt each time you enter, exploration stays relevant, and you are rarely allowed to rely on muscle memory alone.

Starbreak Key Features:

  • Four Shells – choose between four Shell classes with different strengths and roles, such as Wildfire for long-range damage or Ironclad for a sturdier, front-line approach.
  • Multiplayer Co-Op Focus – team up to tackle difficult rooms and bosses, where awareness and coordination often make the difference between a clean clear and a failed run.
  • Challenging Gameplay – combat and platforming demand accuracy and good decision-making, and mistakes can be costly due to the roguelike structure.
  • Procedurally Generated Worlds – levels are reassembled on each entry, keeping routes, fights, and room sequences from becoming overly predictable.
  • Tons of Items to Collect – hunt down a large pool of items (over 200) across the different environments, including variants that add extra value to drops.

Development History / Background:

Starbreak is developed and published by Crunchy Games, an independent studio located in Mountain View, CA, known for experimenting with MMO-style games that can reach players through the web. The studio was founded by Alexander Carobus, who also helped create Realm of the Mad God. Starbreak first appeared in browsers as an open beta on April 1, 2015, giving players an early look at its roguelike structure and co-op platforming while the team worked toward a standalone executable built in C++. After being approved through Steam Greenlight on November 17, 2015, the game later launched on Steam on May 10, 2016.
