Project Genom

Project Genom drops players onto Avalon, an alien planet where firefights play out in real time with manual aiming instead of tab targeting. Built around use-based skill growth and the idea of a reactive world, Neuronhaze’s sci-fi MMO shooter aimed to blend open-world survival, instanced PvP, and larger shared events into one evolving experience.

Overview

Project Genom Overview

Project Genom is an MMO shooter created by the Russian studio Neuronhaze, set on the hostile world of Avalon. Rather than relying on lock-on or hotbar-first combat, it leans into non-targeting gunplay where positioning, aim, and situational awareness matter in every encounter. The pitch centers on humanity fighting for survival while the world shifts around you, with enemies that can change over time and occasional large-scale happenings designed to pull players into the same struggle instead of keeping everyone siloed in small instances.

Alongside its action focus, the game emphasizes a development model where proficiency comes from doing, not simply selecting a class and watching numbers rise. Skills improve through use, encouraging players to specialize naturally based on how they approach combat and exploration. The game also includes an interactive narrative framework intended to respond to player decisions, tying individual choices into the broader state of the world. For competitive players, there is a PvP arena that highlights mechanical skill and build decisions in a more controlled setting.

Traversal is supported by a vehicle system meant to make Avalon feel like a place you travel through, not just a series of disconnected combat spaces. Personal vehicles are positioned as a practical tool for covering ground quickly without the constant fear of permanent loss. On the high end of the feature list, the concept extends to building a spaceship and heading into space with a crew, aiming for a broader sci-fi sandbox vibe beyond ground combat alone.

Development History / Background:

Project Genom is being built by Neuronhaze, a Russian development team. The studio has spoken confidently about its experience, but has not clearly documented how long full production had been underway. Early on, the project was described in a tongue-in-cheek way as a Torque 3D experiment about characters jumping off cliffs, before the team shifted to Unreal Engine 4, which remains the engine used today. The game appeared on Steam Greenlight on July 6, 2015, and was approved one week later on July 13, 2015. An Early Access period supported through Founder’s Packs began on October 29, 2015, leading into its Steam Early Access release on October 12, 2016.
