Metal War Online
Metal War Online is a free-to-play sci-fi PvP shooter built around fast, arcade-style tank combat. Matches drop you into compact battlefields where teams fight for objectives, earn resources, and funnel those rewards back into vehicle upgrades and consumables. With modes like Assault on Base, Capture the Flag, Control Points, and Team Death Match, it is designed as a match-based MMO experience rather than a story-driven campaign.

Metal War Online Overview
Metal War Online is a client-based, free-to-play tank shooter that focuses almost entirely on PvP matchmaking. Instead of offering a large open world, it leans into repeatable, round-based battles where team composition matters, positioning matters, and each vehicle class contributes a clear purpose to the squad. Early on you are handed two starter vehicles, the Ask and the Beast, representing the Scout and Stormtank roles, which effectively cover the classic long-range harasser and the frontline bruiser.
As you spend time in matches, additional classes open up, notably Engineer and Artillery. That broader roster pushes the game closer to a class-shooter mindset, with recognizable battlefield jobs like support, control, and long-range damage. If you have experience with role-based PvP games such as Team Fortress 2 or Overwatch, the overall logic will feel familiar, even though the moment-to-moment play is tank-based rather than infantry-based. Each vehicle also carries a signature ability that helps define how it plays, so switching classes is not just a weapon change, it alters your responsibilities and your survivability.
Matchmaking rotates through common competitive modes including Death Match, Capture the Flag, and point-based objectives. The best moments come when teams actually lean into their roles, Scouts provide vision and pressure, Stormtanks anchor fights, Engineers keep vehicles operational, and Artillery punishes exposed positions. Map layouts generally encourage that kind of interplay, creating pockets of cover, lanes for ranged fire, and routes for flanks.

Metal War Online Classes
Scouts – light, mobile vehicles built for speed and disruption, using camouflage and long-range pressure tools, typically featuring a machine gun paired with missile options for flexible poking and finishing.
Stormtanks – heavily armored brawlers intended to take space and survive sustained fire. They commonly bring strong machine gun and missile launcher loadouts, and their durability makes them a natural choice for players who prefer direct fights and objective holding.
Engineers – support-oriented vehicles that focus on repairs and keeping allies in the fight. Alongside respectable mobility, they use healing tech that can also be weaponized with freezing ammunition to hinder enemies and create openings for the team.
Artillery – long-range damage specialists designed to punish targets from a distance. They aim via a satellite-style targeting approach and arrive later than the early classes, trading low agility and weak close-range tools for high-impact firepower when given room to operate.

Metal War Online was developed and published by GDTeam Limited, a Russian studio known for Arena Online and Rise of Heroes. The project first surfaced publicly in 2012, and it moved into a closed alpha on June 18, 2012, shortly after its initial announcement in Russia. The game was originally positioned around the Unity Web Player, entering open beta on December 1, 2012, and remaining playable in that form until browser support for the Unity Web Player (notably in Chrome) ended in April 2015.
Following that shift, the team pivoted toward a standalone, English-language release and prepared a major update branded as Metal War Online: Retribution. After being greenlit on October 19, 2013, the updated version reached Steam in Early Access on December 11, 2015, landing a little ahead of the expected timing.
