Overview

Heroes Evolved Overview

Heroes Evolved is a free-to-play 3D MOBA that leans into familiar genre foundations, lanes, minion waves, towers, and a final push to destroy the enemy base. It is designed to be quick to download (a lightweight 35MB client) and quick to start, making it easy to hop into a match without a long install or lengthy patching cycle.

The setting frames its roster as champions fighting back after being driven underground centuries earlier by Zakar, the Sorcerer King. In practice, the narrative is mostly a backdrop for arena battles, with the real focus on team composition, map control, and coordinated fights around objectives. Matches play out in classic 5v5 fashion, where players farm, rotate, and group for skirmishes that can quickly swing the pace of the game.

The hero lineup sits at over 55 characters and follows established MOBA role expectations. You will find picks suited for carrying late-game damage, initiating, disabling targets, roaming for ganks, or bursting enemies down, with role labels that echo the language of genre staples (Carry, Ganker, Disabler, Nuker, and so on). As you level during a match, you invest points into abilities, build out items such as weapons and armor, and adapt your approach based on the opposing team and how the lanes are developing.

Heroes Evolved also supports a range of ways to play, including matches against AI, custom lobbies, randomized hero selection modes, solo queue, and ranked play. One feature that stands out on the utility side is its automatic match recording, which lets players revisit games after the fact to review decisions, positioning, and team fight execution.

Heroes Evolved Key Features:

  • Over 55 Playable Heroes – pick from a sizable fantasy roster featuring names like Jeanne, Minerva, Akbar, Hades, Zeus, and many others.
  • Solo, Co-op and AI Modes – jump into several lobby options, from PvP queues to PvE practice, including random-pick variants and ranked matchmaking.
  • Player Customization – use a rune-style system reminiscent of League of Legends to add stat tweaks and tailor how each hero feels.
  • Competitive Gameplay – ranked play is built around repeated matches to place you into more appropriate skill brackets over time.
  • Lightweight Client – the 35MB download is built for fast entry, especially compared to many PC MOBAs.

Heroes Evolved Review

Heroes Evolved is best understood as a streamlined, familiar MOBA experience that prioritizes convenience and accessibility over originality. The core loop is recognizable to anyone who has spent time in the genre, pick a role, manage your lane, build items, rotate to fights, and coordinate around objectives. That familiarity makes it easy to learn, but it also means the game rarely surprises you once the basics click.

Moment-to-moment gameplay is serviceable and readable, with clear lane structure and the expected rhythm of early farming into mid-game rotations and decisive late-game team fights. The roster size is one of its stronger points, giving players plenty of options to find a hero that matches their preferred style, whether that is burst damage, crowd control, or scaling into a late-game carry. Builds and level-up choices provide enough variation to reward matchup knowledge, even if the overall design philosophy stays close to genre standards.

Where Heroes Evolved draws criticism is in presentation and business model perception. R2Games has a reputation for borrowing heavily from popular titles, and the game has been associated with reused or overly familiar visual and audio elements. Even if you focus strictly on the gameplay, this kind of similarity can make the experience feel less distinct than it could have been.

Monetization is another sticking point. The existence of VIP-only heroes and other pay-leaning elements can create an uneven feeling, especially in a competitive genre where players expect access and balance to be as fair as possible. For casual play or learning the genre, it can still be enjoyable, but players looking for a clean competitive ecosystem may be put off by any sense that spending influences the playing field.

The match recording feature is a genuinely useful inclusion, particularly for players trying to improve. Being able to review decisions, map movement, and team fight positioning is valuable, and it is not always standard in lighter MOBAs. Combined with the tiny client size and quick setup, Heroes Evolved can work as a low-commitment option for players who want MOBA matches without the install and upkeep of larger games.

Overall, Heroes Evolved offers a functional, fast-to-access MOBA with a sizable roster and a few helpful quality-of-life features, but it struggles to stand out due to derivative presentation and contentious progression and access choices.

Heroes Evolved is developed and published by R2Games (Reality Squared Games), a China-based company best known for browser-focused releases. Over the years, the publisher has attracted criticism for borrowing heavily from well-known games, and Heroes Evolved has been associated with reused or highly reminiscent icons, sound cues, and other assets that can feel uncomfortably familiar to genre veterans.

The game entered open beta on September 9, 2016, originally planned to run from the 9th through the 18th. That testing period was extended to gather additional feedback, with player progress kept intact for launch. Heroes Evolved later released on Steam on January 23, 2017, and it has also been available on mobile devices.

It is worth noting that the PC version of Heroes Evolved shut down in December, 2018, which is important context if you are looking at the game primarily from the PC MOBA angle rather than as a mobile option.
