Grepolis

Grepolis is a free-to-play, browser-based strategy MMO with an Ancient Greece theme, and it also has iOS and Android versions for playing on the go. You start with a single polis, then expand by upgrading production buildings, balancing resources, and raising an army and navy, while interacting with surrounding villages for steady income and growth. As your influence spreads across islands, the long-term loop becomes managing multiple cities through colonization or by taking territory from other players, which is where the MMO strategy and diplomacy really come into focus.

Overview

Grepolis Overview

Grepolis drops the usual medieval MMORTS template into a myth-soaked version of Ancient Greece, where city management and conquest are tied to divine patronage. As you develop your polis, you will improve resource output, unlock troops through your academy, and build the infrastructure needed to project power across the surrounding islands. The signature twist is the pantheon system, you choose which god to worship (and can benefit from different choices across different cities), which opens up Divine Powers and access to mythical units that can change how fights play out.

Combat is split between land and sea, so expansion is not only about having a bigger army, it is also about controlling shipping lanes and timing naval pressure to support island warfare. Mythical creatures like Pegasus or Hydra add flavor, but they also function as specialized tools in the broader strategy of raids, sieges, and coordinated alliance operations. The game’s strongest strategic layer is multi-city play: once you have more than one polis, you can specialize them, run several academies for additional research potential, and diversify your god choices to broaden your overall toolkit.

At its core, Grepolis remains a familiar timer-based MMO strategy experience, you queue buildings, manage production, and plan around travel times and player activity windows. The pacing can be satisfying for long-term planners and alliance players, although the design also leans heavily toward encouraging premium currency use, which can be a sticking point for anyone trying to compete at the sharp end without spending.

Grepolis Key Features:

  • Classic City Management Loop – Expand and improve your polis over time, keeping resources and build queues efficient so you can sustain troop production and upgrades.
  • Choose a Patron Deity – Worship Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Athena, Hades, or Artemis to gain Divine Powers and recruit distinctive mythical units suited for land or naval engagements.
  • Server-Wide World Wonder Phase – Once the right conditions are met, servers enter The Era of World Wonders, letting alliances construct Wonders like the Pyramid of Giza on islands they control.
  • Play on Browser or Mobile – Continue the same account across browser, iOS, and Android, making it easy to check queues and respond to attacks away from your PC.
  • Expand by Settling or Taking – Grow through colonization and planned city placement, or seize existing cities through coordinated military action.
  • Fresh Start Option After Defeat – If your holdings are wiped out, Grepolis allows you to begin again with a new empire, rather than locking you into a permanently ruined position.
